written on the label

Does this mean one ball, one sleeve bearing?

Yep, they're not common anymore as 2BB has become cheap enough to cut into pretty much any cost saving 1B1S used to have.

Which leads me to a related question: how do one ball bearing fans work?

I have a one ball bearing fidget spinner and there is a lot of slop on the bearing, or does one ball bearing imply ball/sleeve?

To be fair, fidget spinners don't have the highest quality bearings.

So single ball bearing fans really are just that? I would expect them to be quite noisy as they rattle around.

They do. Even DBB's rattle at low RPM. That's why I prefer a rifle or FDB.

Noooooooooooooooo............ these are PSU fans. Not bicycle bottom brackets.
