Powering new GPU in old Dell workstation

I have an older Dell workstation (T5500, 2xX5670 Xeons, 1050 Ti) that I'd like to upgrade the GPU in. What I was considering was the 2060 Super Founder's Edition, which is available at a local retailer. The power supply is the original Dell PSU, which is an 875 watt 80 silver model. The problem is that the PSU has 2x6-pin PCIe connectors instead of the 1x8-pin connector that the 2060S FE requires. I naively thought that since each 6-pin adapter supplies 75w, it would be a simple matter to get a y-cable to join the two cables into one 150 watt 8-pin connector.

However, Nvidia emphatically discourages users from doing this. See here. Instead they recommend using a single 6-pin to single 8-pin adapter, assuming that your PSU can deliver enough power on that 12v rail.

My PSU has five 12v rails @ 18 amps each. If my math is correct, that's 216 watts per rail so it should be safe to use a single 6-pin to 8-pin adapter...right? Or am I just going to smoke my workstation?

Already tried to just use a 6 pins PEG connector? By far the most safe option.

I’m still shopping for the card. I don’t want to drop $400 on a video card I can’t use.

Any idea if the founder’s edition cards work with 6-pin in an 8-pin socket?

Just use a 6pin to 8pin adapter, the 2060S isn't power hungry.
