Default curious about people's real experiences with failing psu's and damage to pc component

I'm curious about people's real experiences with failing psu's and damage to pc components.
I am using an older corsair unit hx850 from 2009. it has had very light use. and sometimes dormant too.

but regardless of that, im curious about real experiences with failing psu's and damage to other components due to voltage spikes (by which i mean internal to the psu from out of spec internal components..not anything to do with surges from the mains) or what not.
thanks in advance for any comments.

my knowledge of electronics is virtually zero. so..the question.

PS: I have yet to experience any psu failure myself. I have however discarded a couple of crappy ones due to noisy fans. and sold 2 others still working....

Electrolytic capacitors can age faster when not used than when in use.
