The website tells the browser that the language code is ISO-8859-1 but then the forum sends everything using UTF-8.
You can see that by right clicking on the page and selecting View Source, at least in Firefox ... you'll see this line:

    Code:
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1" />
You can manually force to render the page assuming everything is UTF-8 and then your username will show correctly.
In Firefox, you do that from the View menu > Text Encoding > Unicode

So administrator must change the configuration to send UTF-8 instead of ISO-8859-1 in the header, there's probably a vBulletin option somewhere.

ps. and once the page is in utf-8 rendering mode, if you type Cass-Olé in the login box, it should send Cass-Olé to the login script and you should login successfully.

I should add, as long as it's feedback / bug report time, the url rewrite is kind of bad as there's still the ? in the url ... removal is done for seo purposes and easier indexing by search engines, so right now this rewrite is kind of pointless.

For example, the url of this page is

    Code:
    http://www.jonnyguru.com/forums/showthread.php?16405-Site-updates/page3
A more proper/correct rewrite would be

    Code:
    http://www.jonnyguru.com/forums/showthread/16405-Site-updates/page3
    or maybe

    Code:
    http://www.jonnyguru.com/forums/Site-updates/16405/page3
but this would probably be much harder to do.

SSL still doesn't work, especially on login, which is extremely concerning and a huge security hole. Everyone, be careful when logging in on public Wi-Fi anywhere.

I'll work on the charset, I've got to rebuild the search index after changing it. Might try that this weekend.

I've also not given up on the attachments and avatar issue. I've just spent to much time on them right now. Trying to get the content back up and the forums to 100%

No I haven't added SSL yet. I want to fix as much as I can before diving into new tasks.

Keep posting stuff though, I'll make a list.

Was there a reason to not go to vBulletin 5?

I went with vB4 because of how everything went down. I was hoping to be able to salvage everything I can out of the old db backups which are on vB3 and older PHP and MYSQL. Having had the server updated back in Oct (I think it was) is what caused most of our issues (didn't know till after the fact), which is when the server PHP and MYSQL got updated.

I ran through and fixed what I could to get the site back live but still had issues. Moving to vB4 keeps the gap at a minimal and gives me the best hope (I think). Moving up to vB5 would increase not only with PHP and MYSQL but even more vB changes.

Don't get me wrong here. I'm so outdated on this shit it isn't funny. That's why I kept my old setup as long as I did. But the time has come that something had to be done so now was as good a time as any. I just wish I could have been more prepared before the rug was pulled out. Oh well though, we'll get through it .

And don't get me wrong either, it was just a question.

I can see there was a lot of work.
