    Default My MicroFly build log...

Since the IDE flash drive died in my SFF box and I've had to go and buy a new one and reinstall Windows on it, I've decided to use the down time to put a little effort into customizing it.

The first thing I wanted to do is remove the support brace that runs over the CPU cooler. Not just because it prevents the use of big coolers, especially since I have no plans to use another cooler right now, but because when you look down through the top window, all you see is this big chunk of aluminum going across the case. I never thought it looked good. I'd rather see PCB and heatsinks!!!

So I had a spare MicroFly that I "borrowed" the steel support bar out of. The steel support bar is what's used on the video card side of the MicroFly case for support.

So the first two photos show where the support bar COMES FROM and the next three photos show the aluminum brace I want to remove and how it's riveted to the front and rear panels.

Here's what it looks like with the support bar cut out. Wow! I can see my X-Wind now!

In the third photo, I'm showing how the steel bar supports the HDD cage... which would be good if I were using it. I'm not currently. But I plan to take my time with this build, so who knows what I may decide.

Ok... So my IDE flash drive crashed when I tried to install the drivers for this 7950GT OC card. I think I might have exceeded the capacity of the drive, but when I rebooted the machine, the drive refused to even show up in the BIOS half of the time! The eeprom or SPD or whatever the flash has in it that has the information about what the deive does, etc. for the mobo's BIOS must have gotten corrupted.

So now I'm back to this card... It fits. Barely. I don't really like how it's touching the metal here. I think I'm taking a cutting disc and taking out some aluminum from the SLI bridge notch all of the way back to where the optical mounts.

The third photo shows the whole "radiator fin" theme of the build. You have the copper fins of the X-Wind, the fins of the TT Spirit RS RAM cooler and the fins of the XFX passively cooled video card. The Epox board can't control fan RPM's of 3-pin fan (via VDC control) but running the fan full RPM is too loud. Tucked underneath the board is a string of resistors that slow the fan down by about 25%. It's still audible, but it moves enough air to cool the RAM and video card.
