Default What is this piece I removed from my hard drive?

I found a foam sticker inside my hard drive plugging the breathing hole. Can anyone tell me what it's called. It has an audio symbol on one side looks like circuitry and the other side it's a foam pad. I have a seagate momentus 7200.4. My hardrive was making a loud whining sound and after removing this it is working fine now. But I cannot figure out what this is.

Looks like a sticker of some type? Was it stuck on the outside?

Was it a HDD you installed, or a prebuilt system?

I'm really not sure how that HDD still works.

That is the filter for the breather hole to prevent dust and debris into the HDD. Without the said filter in dust can get into the drive, just one spec of dust can cause havoc with the heads of a drive and do irreversible damage.

I would get all you data off that drive whilst you can!

I looked it up and doesn't look like its a Standard part oO

But it might be some kind of valve or preassure release as HDD do not operate with normal atmospheres...

It's actually under the label. You can't see it in that Storage Review piece because they never removed the label from the HDD housing.

They do. The pressure inside of a (standard air-filled) hard drive is the same as atmospheric pressure. The part in the picture is the breather filter/dessicant pouch thing, and while the drive will work for a while without it, it'll die as soon as some dust gets in and under the heads. Normally it's on the inside of the drive, opposite the breather hole in the cover or base casting.

INSIDE? Hard drives are not meant to be opened up.
