Oh, we're talking about the old AX1200, not the AX1200i??

My apologies for causing unnecessary confusion.

    However the article

    "Corsair upgraded capacitors"

makes the capacitor failure conjecture even more plausible.

Funny thing is... Corsair didn't upgrade anything in those units going from 7 to 10 years.

Just when I thought I had it figured, you bring in the truth and confuse me again...

wonder if corsair extended warranty because competition was doing it and they thought they better add it or look bad

7 years goes in a flash, and I hope stuff lasts longer than this.

Consumer level product. And in this case, a highly complex consumer level product.

I'd be lying to you if I told you that an AX1200 was less susceptible to failure than a much simpler CX-M.

Build quality only goes so far. When you have more components, you have more potential points of failure.

MIL-HDBK-217 agrees with you that 'a circuit's reliability decreases when components are added'; so simplicity may favor the CX-M

Of course this is not valid for adding protective components

So Corsair emailed me this morning and offered to replace it with an HX1200i PSU. Seems like a reasonable PSU in comparison to my old AX1200?

    Thanks
