Default EVGA GD, CM mastermaker are they that good?

I found that both are tier 2 PSUs

    https://linustechtips.com/main/topic...-list-updated/

ofc tier is just reference and doesn't tell the whole story but I wondered why there are tier 2

Corrent me if I'm wrong but they refer to these

    https://asia.evga.com/products/produ...100-GD-0550-V2

    http://www.coolermaster.com/powersup...asterwatt-750/

Both semimodular and backed with a 5 year warranty

the evga GD psus are rated to do full power at 40C and I have no idea about the CM, GD psus use HYB fan while CM have LDB fans

I only fine reviews on the masterwatt units and they use second tier capacitors I think

    What do you think?

I believe that means a PSU from a factory that outsources some materials (i.e. PCB-A, cable manufacturing, etc.), but I could be wrong.

Tomshardware, LTT and I don't know which other tech websites classify PSU quality in tiers with tier 1 being excelent and tier 7 being below average in case of linus tech tips forum

I've only seen reviews of the Cooler Master, so that's the only one we can say for sure is what it is.

Kitguru only gave it a 7.5. 85°C caps in a semi-fanless PSU isn't a good idea if you want your product to last. It's also an antiquated double forward topology, which is part of why it can't do much better than Bronze.

As for the EVGA: Not sure how anyone can "judge" and "categorize" a PSU they've never owned/used/reviewed/etc.

Well, a capacitor from a tier 2 factory isn't bad if it's getting it's aluminum from a proper refiner and their electrolyte formula from a reputable source.

So you could say that all of those Japanese capacitors made in Indonesia, Philippines, etc. are "tier 2".

    Yes. Welcome to the forums.

The general consensus is such lists are stupid as much of the "opinions" are stated by people with zero experience with the product.

Like I said in my last post: The Cooler Master has reviews. The EVGA doesn't. So how do you put the EVGA in a "tier".

They base what "tier" to put it in because it's based off of a known FSP platform, but that defines the platform. I can take a perfectly good Seasonic Prime platform, shave about $5+ off the BOM and make something shittier than your worse Aerocool. Does that still mean my PSU is "tier 1"?

According to my personal experience, the Masterwatt semi-fanless mode is awful, it might take a long time to turn the fan on in a game or heavy application, but you might also have "fan on/off" loops in the desktop.

I think semi-fanless garbage ruins what would be a great budget product.

Not really, it looks quite random. A PSU from one, two or even three tiers lower can even be better.

That's why I asked what a tier 2 PSU is.
