    Default Single primary capacitor

I see some supplies use a single (400V) primary capacitor.

Seems to me this is an issue when using 110V as then the capacitor energy is quartered; is there a circuit trick I am missing? like the voltage doubler mechanism when using two (200V) capacitors.

Yes, you are missing the PFC (Boost) Circuit that boosts the voltage first to around 380V or something like that.

Thanks; challenging given that one is boosting a very rough DC source.

That was the bit I was missing, as I am used to boost/buck on smooth DC sources.
