    Default Confusing problem

    Hi all,

I have a problem that on the face of it seems to be psu related but I suspect it may go a little deeper than that, so here goes:

I had an old but reliable gaming rig that ran for years on a corsair 600w psu but one day wouldn't boot from a cold start, would reboot fine from a a windows restart. to get the machine to boot I would have to rock the psu switch on and off and at random it would start up. So I bought a seasonic 1250w psu from a popular online auction site and all my problems where solved for a couple of weeks and the problems started again. At this point I thought well my neice has a half decent pc sat doing nothing so I gave her half what it was worth and continued to put the seasonic and my 7870 into it to see if all would be ok, and it was, for a few weeks and now i'm having the same issues, as long as I don't power down the pc it runs flawlessly but from a cold start it's a lottery if I can get it to boot.

Any help would be great as I don't want to go out buying components on the off chance that it might solve the problem.

    Thanks in advance,

    Jon.

No obvious blackening or scorching, assuming that is what you are asking

    It's the motherboard.

    Hi Jonny,

So are you saying the original motherboard has damaged the seasonic psu as it is displaying the same traits in both pcs? and the second pc was fine with the generic 450w builder psu in til i changed to the 7870 and seasonic

I've seen this dozens of times and it's always a faulty/failed motherboard.

Wait, so does the problem happen in two different PCs on two different mobos? You said you put the stuff in your niece's computer and then it happened after 3 weeks.

You're right. I missed that he moved the PSU and the 7870 over and got the same problem.

So ALL THE PARTS were different except the PSU and the graphics card and you ran into the same problem?

Well... I suppose a graphics card can cause the same symptom as a failed motherboard. You put a dead card in a motherboard and you end up with a dead motherboard, so it makes sense.
