    Many PSU companies use higher quality connectors than required by PCIe SIG. For most PSU 7A (so 21A combined, around 250W) are still ok. Still, there is no guarantee for that. I've also seen connectors rated for 9A (>300W) but those are not common.

    39-00-00211 [Mini-Fit Female Crimp Terminal, Tin (Sn) over Nickel (Ni), 16 AWG, Reel] is a type I prefer to use here for the few non-essential wires, rated 9Amps

    45750-3111 [Mini-Fit Plus Crimp Terminal, 16 AWG, Reel, Copper (Cu) Alloy, Tin (Sn)] is what I use for essential volts/grounds, 13Amps

    The entire Molex catalog is either 9A or 13A, available for public purchase through distributors in the US ... what shipped in the factory power supply cables I own (7A 9A 13A), & whether Molex made them or not, at times is hard to tell. The 7Amp variety, I was unaware of, I hope that's not what was in the Silverstone 1500, lol

    Unless of course you mean the vinyl / plastic connectors; Molex catalog lists 9A (3 types) or 13A (167 types)

    Trivia: of those three 9Amp types listed, is a Grfx 6pin, assume rated for 75w > 45559-0002 Mini-Fit Jr. Receptacle Housing, Dual Row, Custom for PCI Express* High-end Graphics Add-In Card Applications Only

    The connector housing list is almost exclusively 13A rated, the use of 7A / 9A should be uncommon it seems, unless of course they're sourcing faux Molex parts *shrug*, & the Strider 1500 is almost 10years old, maybe the data I gathered doesn't apply to older products

    Rasmus0909 isn't dead yet is he?

    None of the above means actual connectors in ATX PSUs will hold up to such currents.

    PCI-E 8-pin is rated up to 150W, anything else is a bonus. That there is a talk about such "bonus" is not a thing stemming from any specifications, but from results of users who actually ran overclocked GPUs with high enough power draw, and should not be treated as 100% guarantee that you will get exact same results.

    yes, in the Alienware brand the modulars are Delta Huntkey (850w) Delta HiPro (875w 1000w 1100w) Flextronics (1200w) Delta (1500w); the Inspiron XPS type consumer-grade PCs would be non-modular mass-produced low-power types, what you'd find in an HP/ Compaq etc

    My 1500w (1440w 12v max) Delta on delivery day, I've since made a custom 16AWG cable harness for it, it's running a solo 290x right now til I can afford a pair of better cards

    Modular may be tidy, but there are cables to lose and more contacts to worry over.

    Friend of mine had a similar case recently, mining with 1080Ti on RM1000 using "Premium Individually Sleeved PSU Cable Kit Starter Package". He bought another 1080ti and another starter pack and both 8-pin pcie connectors powering the second card (single per cable) started smoking within days... Got them replaced by corsair, but considering the price, corsair could have used gold plated premium connectors and or at least have a better QC...

    We are almost back to the Tesla/Edison debate; Tesla won: higher powers should be transported at higher voltages (to keep the currents down). Some portable tools and large trucks use 24V nominal, so that might be about as high as one can safely go for exposed terminals.

    The Mac Cube power supply was 28V

    Not dead, just haven't checked this forum

    I've been running the 290x at 235W and the 390 at 290W. I realise now reading your posts that the 390 might be a bit daring.

    However, what I don't understand is that when I do the maths myself, I seem to be fully within the Molex spec of the Mini-Fit Jr connectors.

    The Mini-Fit Jr are rated at a minmum of 9A per loop. Seeing as PCI-e power has three 12V loops...

    P_max = 3 * 12V * 9A
    P_max = 324W

    I'm using the daisy-chained cable for both, but I don't really understand how this is exceeding anything. Connectors, pins and wire should be plenty adequate, no? The rails on the PSU are rated for 300W continuous (360W peak) each. And honestly, what's the point of having 300W rails if you can't even supply 300W because of the connector?

    Just want to note that I also have a fan blowing cold air over the connectors in order to not increase the resistance through temperature, too much at least.

    Also, I fixed the connector by soldering a new original Molex one in place of the melted one. Same for the cable - crimped AND soldered the connectors.

    Glad ya ain;t dead Rasmus, I don't have an answer, other than maybe in 2009 the ATX spec was 7Amp terminals were ok, & maybe still are (3x12x7=252), where pins or connectors aren't or weren't sourced exclusively from Molex

    mixed advice above

    Since it's said to be the PSU end of the cable that burns up more often, I'm trying to wrap my head around the statements where:
    1) it's a given that an 8pin cable is rated for 150w max (but is normally flaunted)
    2) dual-8pins on one cable 'may be rated 225w to as much as 300w'
    3) if the single 8pin can't ('should not') exceed 150w at the PSU-GPU ends of cable, why can dual-8pins exceed it, pull up to 1.5 times to twice as much juice as a single 8pin? It's counter-intuitive, almost as if a single 8pin should get a 225w/300w rating
    4)Why 'should' a single 8pin cable get a 225w-300w rating the same as a dual-8pin?, & why does 150w seem too mild? Well, in the basic Corsair or EVGA or Silverstone 1500 that uses an 8pin modular connector on the front panel, that 8pin (@PSU end) is expected to output 225w-300w as it is (over the pigtail variety), so why can't a single 8pin do it too? In otherwords, if the PSU end of the cable's 8pin by itself can handle 225w-300w, why does it matter how many plugs it has at the GPU end of cable (one vs two)
    5)8pins should be rated for whatever they can dish out max at the PSU end by itself, regardless the head count, so why the strict 150w limit for single heads? Doesn't make sense, lol ... the PSU end of the cable 'does all the work' (if pigtailed), yet, it itself is just an 8pin at the point of origin, why doesn't the PSU end of the cable get the lower 150w rating also, heehee

    At any rate, I posted so u can see the screen grabs until someone gets the right answers posted
