    Default PSU for a build for a friend.

    My best friend is fighting thymic carcinoma right now, and I'm wanting to do a nice thing for him for Christmas. I'm piecing together a PC for him that should be able to play Fortnite at low-medium settings (about all I can do), and I have an old HP Pavillion P7-1207C that I'm using as the base, though I might upgrade the A6-3620 to an A8-3850 if I can get one in time.

    I have an 8800GTS that I'm popping in it, and obviously I don't trust the stock 270 watt HP PSU it came with to power it. I have an older Antec TP3-550 that was not used much, even when it was in use. Do you guys think it will be reasonable for the build? I mean in terms of reliability, not power output.

    Thanks in advance.

    I don't think an 8800GTS can run Fortnite....

    That being said, just get a GT1030, which will run off even a down-powered PCI-E slot. Just needs 30W. no PSU resplacement, and it'll run Fortnite.

    No, the TP3 is just too old and despite the label is in reality a "true single Rail" unit -> no OCP on any rail.

    IIRC its from 2006 -> http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php...=Story4&reid=1
    Even if it was a pretty good PSU for the time, it is not today because capacitors age with time. And technology advances.

    Get a cheaper PSU like Corsair CX450 or be quiet Pure Power 400W.

    If you are really short on cash for this build post some really detailed pictures of both PSU's.
    Then we can judge if they'd be ok to use or not, with some fingers crossed of course...

    I also have a Corsair VX550 thatr was in this system for a few years. Would that be a better choice? I'm broke right now. I'm a special education teacher working three jobs so that he and his kids can have the holidays, so I'm doing the best I can on what little I can make.

    I put in the VX550, and a friend had a Radeon HD 7570. It'll be low-medium settings, but it is better than nothing.
