Question EVGA 650GS - issue on 3.3V Rail?

    Hi,

I have a couple years with an EVGA 650GS PSU. No issues, until not so long ago.

Suddenly my motherboard (Asus p8z68 that is 5 years old) rebooted and told me that the ASUS surge protection kicked in for some reason. Upon entering the bios the 3.3v sensor was telling 2.9V. All the other voltages are stable at their nominal.

I checked my connection, disconnected and reconnected everything rebooted. Nothing seemed odd. I connected a voltmeter on the main ATX connector between the 3.3 and ground to monitor. And yes the voltage varies sometimes and drops to 3.1v after long gaming sessions.

I’m not sure what to thing about this. Is my PSU going bad? What is the 3.3v for btw. First time I have a good PSU in 20 years and first time with issues too. I’m seeking for your expertise.

    My system is the following: 2500k OC@4.5GHz / P8Z68-V PRO / GTX1080 FE / 12GB DDR3 / 1SSD / 4 HDD

    Thanks in advance

    Asus Surge Protection is B.S.

    Disable it.

    BIOS voltage readings are B.S.

    Ignore them.

Thanks for the quick response, I will do that. My multimeter reading (from the 24 pin connector) went down to a bit less than 3.1V is it an issue? Do you know what this tension power?

3.1V is a significant drop in reading using a DMM.

Make sure the modular cable is firmly inserted into the PSU. Maybe even unplug, check wires and re-seat. It shouldn't be THAT low.

Would you recommend disabling anti-surge even if it almost never trips (like twice in 3 years for me)? Is it a gimmick?

Anti surge is useless. First thing I disable on all my Asus boards. It will still trip with the best PSUs on Earth.

So I reviewed all connections again and the modular 24 pin was loose on PSU side. I removed / reconnected it and it is now rock stable like day 1. My 3.3V hoovers around 3.34 / 3.36 and never moves from there.

That fixed my CPU Cooler not starting at times too (CNPS9900 MAX).

That's just great. Thanks again to all!
