Thread: Japanese Caps?! W H Y??????

    Default Capacitor Temperature in modern PSU...

    I'm measuring the temperatures of caps in a couple of PSUs right now.
    Sadly I only have a rather cheapish themperature measurement thingy with a bit of heatshrink over the thermocouple. So take it with a bit of salt, as usual.

    I've measured so far: a 400W FSP made thing, under ~415W Primary and measured around 65°C between secondary heatsink and the coil. That's rather hot. So I'd expect the caps to be rather hot. And they are. 46°C...

    So because I've got nothing else to do and am bored I took another unit (850W Bitfenix Whisper M, around 630W primary load) and put the thermocouple between the 4 polymer caps. Because I thought they'd get hot. And they are. 45°C...

    So my Room Temperature right now is around 18°C, +/-3 or 4°C...

    What do you think?
    Do you have any measurements of the temperature of caps??

    €dit:
    Corsair HX750i, between upper +12V rectifier module and left cap (mod cables to front): ~40°C...
    Even on the Silverstone SX700-LPT the cap doesn't get 50°C hot...


    Though all Tests were done at about room temperature...
    And not the specified 40°C or more this PSU are all specified for (at least)...

    You also measured the temp in power supplies which are known for failed capacitors?

    Which FSP for example do you use?

    No, for that I have to move out of my room and use the (shitty) stairs :P
    I just used what I had lying round here...

    And the first one of the bunch was interestingly an FSP unit by the way...

    But it's a good idea, gonna do that later, when I'm back from the university Hospital....
    But the ones you mentioned used 8mm capacitors (usually around 1000h Lifetime with lower end Cap series and usually way worse ripple current ratings, if I remember correctly)...

    Funny thing about PSUs these days... they don't generate much heat.

    Funny thing that the coil on the secondary side was the hottest in at least two of the tested PSUs (the Xilence and the FSP)...

    sorry...if this sounds like a noob question, but are jap capacitors really better? than say like...caps made in taiwan? or ones made in 'merica?
    and if so, better in what capacity? (See what i did there?? lol)
