    Default Dumb question: which PSU protection from high voltage on AC mains?

    What could I use to protect a PSU from high voltage electric power?

    To say, if the AC mains suddenly starts supplying 400V instead of 230V?

    almost PSUs have MOV components to avoid high voltage tranfering. sometime they call "anti surge protector" (like lighting or voltage spike come from AC line)


    or you can buy outlet have "surge protection" like tripp-lite or APC. but need choise product use for 220V . because product design for 110v will blow up if you connect to 220V AC line

    No, I'm not talking about surge/peak: just of wrong voltage feed from mains.

    Is there something which will disconnect from mains immediately, preventing from blowing the PSU?

    I dont know have this device but can make a simple circuit to protect ( MCB and MOVs )
    maximum voltage of MOVs choise around 380v (if using 220v AC line), size of MOVs 20, use some 5 6 pcs connect in parallel ( can handle a heavy current flow)
    MOV use in PSU usual choise a High value 470v or over 500V

    I don't know about availability, this disconnect in high\low wattage about 180/270V with delay for 10 sec or 4 minute depends on the product.

    No, there isn't.
    It just explodes...
    Because there isn't a need for it...

    There's a datasheet wich mentions 'under voltage protection' but no overvoltage. But Over Temperature protection (wich can lead to the funny thing that there are PSU on the market with two OTP implementations on the same unit. No I'm NOT kidding. I have one of those units)

    It's definitely possible, but not using MOV's, they will just catch fire if you feed them a higher voltage for a prolonged time.
    And when they finally fail the device will anyway see the full 400VAC.

    I'm borrowing these pictures from Badcaps, link provided below.
    It's an automatic voltage selector PCB for a PSU.
    The way it's implemented here you don't have to select the correct line voltage of 110v or 230v, the relay does it for you.
    It would just need to be modified slightly to switch between 230v and 400v.
    And at the 400v point just don't have anything connected, that way it will work as a auto disconnect PCB instead

    And as an additional hypothesis (or further dumb question!), as far as you know, if it switched, to say, between 230V and 260V, it would disconnect the device (PSU) at any peak/surge or just if the AC mean value were >260V continuatively?

    For a lot of PSU 264V AC are still ok.
