Even if you only play games with your PC, Ryzen 5 is mostly more interesting then similar priced i5's. Only a small group can better choose a i5. That are the gamers, that don't play CPU heavy games and prefer 120 fps or more.

    Really?

    I think it's more a mixed bag.

    Anandtech review of the 6c/12t R5 1600X.

IMHO getting an R5 1600 for just $219, then OCing it a bit to 3.8~4.0GHz == spectacular bang for the buck (~ same performance than $430 i7 Extreme 6800K).

    Hey

I'm looking for an upgrade from my old I5 4490. Would R5 1600 be better for game streaming (twitch, youtube) than i5 8600? Or it's better to go for i7 7700K and overclock it a bit?

No, the AMD is better for two high load applications like game streaming.

Seems like Coffee Lake CPUs are better choice now for gaming.
I bought Ryzen 1600 because there were no Coffee Lake CPUs. Hmm...
    Just sayin...
