So I suppose the question then becomes, should I go for an RX480 (and which one, at that), or save up more for a GTX 1070? I get that Freesync is good, but I would imagine that the 1070 would be overall better for longer, if that makes sense.

Well... yes and no. For now, GTX1070 is undeniably more powerful. But you have to take into account that, as a rule of thumb, GeForce cards don't age as well as Radeons do. For example, R9-290 and GTX780 were pretty much on par in their glory days, but if you compare them in recent games R9 fares way better.

The things might be similar with RX-480, especially seeing as Radeon cards reportedly perform better in DirectX12 than GeForce, but there's no real way to tell the future

Okay, thanks. That makes sense. Any suggestions on which model to look at? Preferably on Amazon, as I have almost enough credit on Amazon to get an 8gb one outright. I want one with a good warranty, and good cooling, as I live in the desert southwest.

If your case can handle long (300mm GPUs) then go for the XFX GTR and if not, go with the sapphire nitro as they are the best cards this time around. The XFX is certainly the better card as they all seem to be really cool and have tonnes of OC'ing headroom as well (quite a lot of them are getting close to 1500Mhz on air)

Length shouldn't be an issue, my case is a Lian Li Rocketfish full tower. I'll check out the XFX, I've had a good experience with their support. Thanks!

    Nice, have fun

I was thinking about getting a RX-480 8GB too, but in the end I figured I might as well wait for AMD Vega-based cards.
