    Default Corsair RM550 noise

    Hello Johnnyguru forummembers,

    So I've sent my old RM550W back to Corsair because it was making a lot of weird noise. Namely;

    At 50% GPU load;
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Hq4x3SItVo

    At 99% GPU load;
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJQCGWbTD54

    They agreed to replace it. Today the new unit arrived;

    50% GPU load
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ZaDKeMIQiE

    99% GPU load.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zz-bjVz0THw

    What you're looking/hearing for is the rattling noise at 50%, and the scraping coilwhine at 99%.

    I'm wondering, do modern power supplies just make these noises? Because I can't recall ever hearing my power supply (and i've been building PC's for 12 years now). Or are the Corsair RM series notorious for this?

    Wondering what I should do with this case, thought I'd ask the community with the most know-how regarding this matter to either tell me i'm making a big deal out of it, or i'm justified to be annoyed by this sound. Because right now I am.

    System;
    Core i5-4670K (4,2ghz)
    MSI Z87i Gaming AC
    Corsair Vengeance 8GB DDR3 1600-CL8
    MSI GTX 980 Gaming AC

    PSU in question;
    Corsair RM550W

    Thanks in advance.

    Regards,
    maj.

    Why most of the time that coil whine appears, a maxwell GPU is involved?
    When this happens(replacement exhibits coil whine too), usually the best you can do is use a different PSU

    Well the coil whine is definitely not originating from the GPU.

    No, the 'old' RM550

    So corsair is offering an upgrade because of all the hassle, but i'd be more interested what you guys think about asking it to be swapped to an RMx or RMi series.

    Are those internals any better perhaps?

    Yes, RMx or RMi is much better than RM. Idk if it will translate into less coil whine though.

    Any news regarding your RMA/upgrade to a RMx unit?

    Coil whine often comes from a combination of parts, for instance one PSU with a specific graphics card may produce coil noise, but if you test them one at a time on another system, they'll be silent. My current system (HX 620 PSU, P8Z77-i Deluxe motherboard) produces coil whine even when the system idles unless I turn off some energy saving features in the BIOS. Go figure. Hopefully I'll be able to turn them back on when I replace this HX unit.
