    This Y-cap you used to populate 'CY4', reducing ripple in the process:





    What exactly does it 'connect', and how does it work?

    Why do you think they left it out OEM?

    IIRC it connects +5 V SB return (GND) with primary side common ground (the rectified -). I guess that according to their measurements the ripple/noise is OK and they think can leave it out to save half a cent per unit. It is possible higher-power versions of the platform have it populated.

    That's weird, even this ancient cheap Oh Deer! relic came OEM with its Y-cap across primary/secondary populated.

    Yeah but it is only ordinary ceramic cap, not even Y1 safety cap.
