Thanks for the input so far everyone! I'm planning on about 5-6 WD or HGST 4TB NAS drives for this build. If startup may become an issue, what sort of numbers/quality should I be looking for in my PSU? I've never paid close attention to the 3/5v rails, but it sounds like something that is a consideration.

True: but just over an about 150W DC power draw and with higher intake temp (as typical for Seasonic units). In this case (a file server) it should be a non-issue.

If you need a quiet 2 PEG unit, an HX 350 would be among the last options to consider. In this case, it's a file server, so likely no need for PEG connectors.

If you go for WD Reds, they will draw power from the 12V rail only (IIRC, check the datasheet): at any rate, 6 disks are just 7-8A from the 5V rail, nothing serious I'd say.

HX 350 plus Intel Quadcore plus Nvidia GTX 970 work perfectly fine

I didn't say it wouldn't work well: but I'll never prefer that PSU over (to say) a Straight Power E10 400W if I want a really quiet system.

Straight Power 10 is definately the better psu in all aspects. However Straight Power 10 is also more expensive.

That's right, Philip, but money wasn't taken into consideration, the boundary condition I put is just "If you need a quiet 2 PEG unit".

With reference to that, the SF HX (a nice, well performing, decently built little unit) wouldn't be my first, second or third choice, probably neither the fourth: it's just that.

I run my storage/plex server with currently 5 hard drives, another one will be added soon, on the seasonic 360 and I'm pretty happy. It's nice p nice efficient with a ball bearing fan and Japanese caps. Noise isn't a concern for me since it's in my basement and the cooling fans are pretty noisy anyway

Well, I went ahead and bought the EVGA 650W P2 platinum PSU because it really seemed a step above the others I was considering, at only about $20 more.

Now my question is this: my gaming PC is running the EVGA GS650. It's not 24/7 on, but it is the more power hungry when it is rrunning (3-4 hours per day at full lload, more on weekends). Should I put the platinum PSU into my gaming PC and salvage the GS gold for my plex server? Or would my plex server benefit more from a higher quality PSU since it is continuously used, despite its lower power draw?

A Seasonic G-series 360W is good choice. Low price, high quality, individual voltage regulation, good efficiency and it can deliver enough power.

IMO it's about irrelevant (but for your electricity bill, in case).
