    Default Hard drive recommendations.

My 2TB Samsung Spinpoint F4 may have just kicked the bucket. It lost the partition table, and deleted my Documents partition. We were able to recover much of the data, but I am unsure if I can trust the drive now.

I'll of course be testing it, and I'll check if it is under warranty; but assuming that it's not, which drives are good now? I'm not terribly worried about speed, more about reliability.

Just checked, it's out of warranty. So, yeah, throw me some ideas on reliable drives, please.

I'm looking in the 2TB and up range. Cost isn't as huge a deal as reliability.

WD and Hitachi are generally reliable but with HDDs it's pretty much luck of the draw. You can get a 2TB for $60/70 from newegg. Unfortunately most of these have only 1 year warranty. Something like this
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822236661
won't be fast but could be more reliable and has 3 years of warranty.

If you don't have a real backup strategy, maybe you should get 2 drives and build a RAID-1 array. It's not a real backup strategy but it should help in case of a failure.

If money is not really an issue, then go SSD. Note the new Samsung SSD 850 PRO series with Vertical NAND (VNAND) architecture is blowing the socks of the competition and has a 10 year warranty! Yeah, the biggest (so far) is 1Tb, but do you really need that much storage? If you do, and again, if money does not matter, get two while Newegg has them $200 off suggested retail.

I have a 120gb 850 for my OS drive, and it's great; but I can't justify the cost for one that big right now.

Are there any other websites that aggregate failure rates? Backblaze has good data, but their sample sizes are rather small.
