Dead Antec HCP-1200 loud POP and smoke out

So I'm sitting here in a little bit of disbelief right now that my HCP-1200 would poop out on me.

My setup consists of a pair of '280x's in crossfire with an i7 920.

I'v had it running for nearly a year now without issue.

I woke up one morning, tried to turn my computer on and heard loud pop, followed by the familiar smell of dead electronics.





I used the original power cable that came with the unit.

I own 5 Antec power supplies, including two of these HCP1200 units and they are my go-to brand for quality. But this is the first power supply of any quality company I have had that has kicked the bucket on my watch.

Did I just get a defective unit?

Hi, I think your cord got dirty and got a short. I had personally running that model with 1600-1800W from the wall for 10 hours at a trade show with its normal power cable. Especially since you had it just turned on and I have not heard of any quality issues of the AC cords.

yes dirty is posible the Cable are mass production so it could by have been broken from first day.

Probably oxidation on the contact prong/sleeve. Since I'm naughty by nature, I'd also suggest you hint to Antec's RMA service about an advance-RMA (whereby they send you a replacement right away, instead of waiting on your now-dead unit to arrive), since the competition is offering that service as well, and the HCP-1200 is a flagship product after all...

most likely(or cord as mentioned) unless you had it incompletely plugged into the cord somehow. (not saying you did, just mentioning other possibilities)

I have a fight every year to keep my air conditioning running.

Stupid box elder bugs work their way into the contacts and short it out.

I've had the contact switch replaced three times.

The last two years I've actually taken the opposite tact.

Instead of trying to enclose the switch (professional tried 3 different models) I have actually left it completely open so the bugs have no sense of cover.

It was actually the video from NickShih showing an HCP-1200 pulling 2200w from the wall that convinced me to buy two of these units for both my home and work computer.

I don't think the cable was dirty, it's been plugged in and running for a good month now in a very clean office space.

I'll file for an RMA now, hopefully this can be taken care of quickly.

Something melted the plug, so something was in there to cause this.

I sit in Taiwan, so I have no influence on our Fremont'ers :-)

Something caused extraordinary high resistance in the plug. Could be a slot flaw in the cable hand.

Some dirt or mud created a short between L and the PSU's case.
