Default NamelessMC's first and only thread on jonnyGURU.com

    Yes, I've tried search.

While the search provided me with useful information to help me narrow my choices, it didn't really give me the concrete information I need.

I used to be an idiot about power-supplies. I even bought an Antec 450w power supply from Staples about 6 months ago for $79.99 and thought it was a good deal. It wasn't until I took a peak at Tomshardware's "PSU 101" thread that I learned I was stooped, didn't get a good deal and was risking the safety of my hard-earned gear by using power supplies that aren't guaranteed to be quality. I'm glad guys like you came out of the woodwork, created FAQs, guides and information regarding specific models and who they're really made by, but I'm in a rock and a hard place.

I have about $100 to spend on a PSU, and I'm pretty torn between a few particular models I saw in Jonnyguru's tiered list. I know most of you will say, "Those models are for high-end gaming machines, and yours isn't high-end.", but the thing is, I'm going to go high-end in the future and because of the guides here, I know that the case and power supply are by far the biggest investments you can make, prior to actually getting the high-end gear. It's stupid to say, "Well I'll get my 8800GTX and Core 2 Duo now, and use the 380 watt power supply that came with my case, and I"ll just get a better PSU later".

That being said, I didn't gimp on the case. I ordered a Centurion 5 from SVC.

Now, with about $100 to spend on the power-supply, I don't really know which direction to go.

Before today, I was torn between an Ultra X-Finity 600 and an Antec TruePower Trio 650. I was leaning toward the Ultra because I can get it for $91.85 shipped and it was ranked Tier2 in JonnyGURU's list. The thing is, how do I know the version I'm getting is Andyson high efficiency grade? There's actually three versions going around but only one is easy to find. There's the Ultra X-Finity 2G 600, the Ultra X-Finity 600 Black and the Ultra X-Pro 600. The 2G and Pro are hard to find, but they're the same street price so I would rather get the best one I can get.

The Antec TruePower Trio 650 goes for about the same price as the OCZ GameXStream 600, but has a higher 12v total amp and the OCZ's popularity leads to it usually being higher cost than the prior.

Then today I saw that a seller popular on this forum is actually pushing a deal for this forum's members giving an 8% discount on SilverStone Strider PSU's and I heard the Silverstone ST60F is a great processor.

Should I get the Silverstone? The Ultra?

What I'm planning on upgrading to in the near future is-
    Core2Duo Allendale 4300
    Nvidia's next mid-high range G80 (Probably 8900GT or 8800GTS 320)
I will never use more than one hard-drive as loading times in games mean nothing to me and I never see myself taking the plunge to water-cooling. I also plan on only using one optical drive forever.

My price-range is basically the ballpark of $100. (The Ultra X-Finity is roughly $91 shipped, Silverstone I have no idea since I never checked if the 8% discount is applied at check-out or before, it's $106 right now as I'm looking at it, and the Antec TruePower is $110 or so.)

The X-Pro 600W is the only one you list made by Andyson. I also consider it the best option of those you listed, followed by the Silverstone.

I can't find the X-Pro at any reputable retailers though.

I know all about budgets, but I'd really invest in a good PSU man. You can future proof your computer for a while with the SilverStone Olympia 650 on Deadeye, shipped for 130 USD.

YOU said that it was in your price range. $129 is the price.

Okay I managed to scrounge up $120-130 for a PSU.

A few questions though, is that indefinitely the best PSU in that price range? The X-Pro 600? Are there alternative recommendations? I am a bit hesitant to purchase through TigerDirect.com. My friends have had bad experiences with them, and while I'm sure a few of you can heartedly recommend them, I'd rather avoid based on the direct experience relation.

How do the X-Pro 600's compare to the Silverstone Strider ST60F?

Is there any other place to get it than TigerDirect? Everywhere else is either over-priced, out of stock or just plain not listed.
