    Does anybody know an Article about Power Consumption and overclocking for Video Cards and CPUs?

    The one I know, is a bit dated...

    I'd like to have some hard numbers on the impact of OC (with adjusted voltage) on the power consumption on modern high end AMD and nVidia Graphics cards (GK104, GK110, Tahiti) as well as modern CPUs...

    I think that some people greatly underestimate the impact overclocking may have on the power consumption...

    Impressions from my reading are chips, regardless of being CPU, APU, or GPU reach a threshold and zoom.

    I've read claims some FX CPUs reach 225-240 watts under 5 GHz overclocks. Voltage and measurement procedures/methodology have not been cited.

    There is also "benching for record" vs 24/7 vs "normal" use scenarios.
    And the capability of supporting hardware.

    Most GPU articles regard overclock GHz as "found money" and a straight forward benefit.
    CPU overclocking past a certain limit receives a " no sense straining for the last 200-300-400 GHz.

    The difference between original reference GPUs And factory overclocked appears in the "not much" difference category.

    The impact is dependent on the voltages being pushed. If someone is overclocking but sticking to stock volts then the impact on power consumption will be minor.

    Even with a voltage bump the power numbers for an OC'd 780 didn't change much, surprisingly. Link

    For CPUs, those kinds of numbers are not unusual. It wasn't hard to pull a ton of current through my old i7 920, and 200W is possible with some serious cooling. An old text file I found had my i7 920 @ 4.2ghz 233w idle and 419w CPU load only. Which wasn't that much considering Tom's was pulling well north of "an extra" 200w at just 4.0ghz Link.

    For procs it's going to depend on how far it's being pushed relative to its process generation and base clocks/voltage. I think the Intel i7 980's still take the cake in terms of highest draw when pushed to the edge, even over the 5Ghz FX 9590.
