Hello, i got my xfx xxx 650w today, according to the package there are 8 sata connectors but i only got 6, but on their website it says "up to 6".
How many did you get or do you know how many there should be? 6 sounds like too few in my ears.

The packaging says a lot of silly things. Best to ignore them all.

There is more then one XFX XXX 650W PSU. The old P1-650X-NLG9/P1-650X-NLH9 should have six sata power connectors and the new SPS-650W-3XB/P1-650X-XXB9 should have eight.

Does this mean an older psu in a newer psu box?

Could've been a return or something and they put it back in the wrong box, but it does sound like the old unit in a new box.
