I would use the Antec TP750, it's a solid PSU, would just open it up to blow the dust out and check that it looks ok (no bloating caps or dead animals etc)
But as JG says that is also a quite...

It's a bit of both, when they "just" bloat it's usually due to overvoltage.
I have seen that on reputable brands too...

But the worse failure is in brands like Capxon, Ltec etc etc, they just...

It's very simple to imagine: The old PSU's without PFC use just a voltage doubler circuit.
The frequency the capacitor sees will be line frequency times two (since we use a full wave bridge...

Generally dual fans can be good, especially when positioned at the exhaust side of the PSU.
But that limits you to 80mm fans and thus they noise goes up significantly.
Enermax also used to have...

Pictures of the aged unit undressed would be nice, hint hint ;)
Also would be cool, if you're anyway going to scrap them, to check the ESR & capacitance of the caps.
Especially the primary side...

My theory is what I've mentioned in some of my posts before:
It's a combination of all these issues.
He claims the setup worked initially.

That's not at all what the Cyberpower tech wrote.
It may work, it may not, it depends on allot of factors.
I've mentioned them before but the main factor is where in the sine wave cycle the power...

Of course it does.
The grid has gone away so the bulk capacitor is discharging.
It will discharge until hopefully the UPS has switched over before it's depleted.
And it will then charge instantly...

The issue stems from the use of APFC as I mentioned.
APFC tries to make a PSU appear as a resistive load to the grid.
It does this by boosting the voltage to around 400v over the entire sine wave....

Nobody can know that.
But ideally APFC PSU's should be used with true sine wave UPS systems.
That's because the APFC circuit is really only designed for true sine waves.
The old Passive PFC or no...

No, a true square wave UPS would be fine, the peak voltage would only need to be 325v to simulate a 230VAC TRMS sine wave.

The reference version of the Vega 64 has only tantalum capacitors.
In any capacitor the stored energy is a factor of voltage, generally most tantalum capacitors are quite low voltage.
So without...
