Hi,
I am currently building a cheap backup system and mainly for running folding @home. I just got a good deal on a AM2 X2 3800+ (65W) CPU ($95 shipped). so I am looking for a good cheap mobo that will let me overclock as much as possible on air and I will also need some good cheap DDR2 ram. Probably just need 512x2. I will also need a PSU of decent quality but I dont think I will need anything special; just a godd cheap stable PSU. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I think I would like to stay under $100 for each item, but will take any suggestions offered.

Thanks

Why the AMS Mercury?

You said up to (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817256008) $100...

Thanks mrwicked,
You have been the most helpful to me over at AMD forums. I will reply back to you over there.

I havent really decided about the PSU yet, as I have jumped on the Ultra 800 x-finity for $118 shipped. I may just use this psu or take it to ebay. being that this will just be mostly for folding and a backup system to use when Im messing around with my C2d system (Overclocking, etc); I really dont need much in the way of a PSU. I have run cheap psu's in the past and havent had any problems. I guess the biggest concerns are the mobo and ram. I will see if I can find any info on the DFI mrwicked has recommended. DFI usually are best for overclocking and the price is good.

Thanks and keep the recs coming please.

read the OP, he's wanting to build a folding rig, not a gaming platform.

Doesn't really matter what kind of platform it is, the PSU wouldn't know either way.

so then what is your issue with the $50 AMS Mercury?

Doesn't look like it has Active PFC, efficiency isn't so good, probably isn't very quiet, etc.

Jonny's old review said it was very quiet.

AT that price range, it's a great psu.

No APFC and not as efficient as many, but quiet, well built and cheap.

The Enhance 500W is more efficient, has APFC and is even quieter, but it costs $12 more. :)

I've been using the AMS Mercury PP-4603 since April 2006, we have it in our family/office computer, pretty much been running about 12 hours/day since we purchased it, no bling but it works well.

I think there are a lot of cheap PSU's out there that will do the job even if they do not have the greatest specs. However for $12 more I thin the enhance might be a better choice.

Jonny do you have a link or model # for the enhance? Or I will just google/froogle it.

Thanks for the link/model

Does anyone have any recommendations on a mobo? Needs to be able to overclock well. Mr wicked recommended the DFI infinity but I was wondering if there was anything else out there. I was looking at the Asus m2n32-sli, which is supposed to be a good board. granted it is slightly more expensive, it may provide better results. I dont know. DFI is usually very good but i dont know how the Infinity line is.

ok, so heres the update.
Got my 64X2 AM2 3800+(65w) cpu and Abit NF-M2 mobo. This little mobo has a bunch of bios options, cant believe it. only had time to play with it for a few minutes (sold my ram). So far running this cpu @ 2.4GHZ with TT BT.

I do not know if I mentioned this befor, but I will also be building a 1.6ghz xeon cruncher. I have the xeons on the way (D1, SL6XK) along with a Asus PC-DL (will need to voltmod this). Still looking for good deal on ram. This should be able to overclock to 3ghz or more.

Anyways I will need a psu for this folding rig. Is the enhance PS-EN5150G the best PSU for its pricepoint? I think with shipping its right around $70 for a 500w psu. I would actually like to stay closer to $50 but dont know if there are any decent psu's that cheap. so if you guys think this psu is the one to get or have other recommendations, please let me know.

there was also the one mr wicked recommended. I will also look to see if any appeal to me and see if you think they are any good.

Thanks

If the Xeon is powered from the 12V rail, you might consider this $28 unit at eWiz. It does lack SATA power connections and has an 80mm fan. A friend of mine runs one in his LAN box(Zap at Anand's jonny). http://www.enhanceusa.com/file/15_specification.pdf

To save a few buck$ consider the ENP-5140GH, 400W unit at eWiz.

thanks for the info. I will lokk into this.

does anyone know anything about this psu: http://www.sunbeamtech.com/PRODUCTS/Power-supply/NUUO/nuuo-550.htm

it about the same price as the 500w enhance, maybe a few bucks cheaper. Im not sure what I need exactly. for now it will be for my xeon cruncher, but I may use it on a different system later down the road, so I guess it may be best to have some of the newer plugs and stuff on it.

over at the AMD forum I linked to the 360w Silverstone and the 450w Xclio. both are $37.99 and should be worth some consideration. Although if there's a possibility for the PSU to eventually be moved into a "bigger" system, then a more robust unit would be needed.

I have this in my PC, and it's been working without a hitch for a while.

apparently they're being used as long term investments. They're not even being sold on ebay.

time to move on, MD.
