I need a new psu. Was thinking of picking up this from a local vendor:

http://us.enlightcorp.com/Product/Product_Detail.aspx?ID=50

would be powering a core2duo e6400, intel mobo, and a 7950gt.

Thoughts?

oh cost.. $55

Pass on it. Where are you located?

In that price range, Enhance ENS-5150 ($69) is a great option.

I am trying to get something I can walk into a store and buy. I dont want to have to pay for shipping and wait a week for the ps to get here. I could go down to frys, but have no idea what to get there.

Fry's has a wide selection. If you have one near by, I'd suggest that.

I was hoping to grab an inexpensive, but decent psu. any suggestions on manufacturers that I should look at? how about minimum wattage I should look at?

Okay I have looked all over. I need a psu for my 7950gt, e6400 system. I would like something that could also power a 8800gts incase I wish to step up in a few months. $60 is not a lot I realize... but I was hoping it is doable.

Throwing a few I found out:

IIRC, for a cheap PSU the AMS is not that bad,
Wait till the AM for the real players to be logged on.

Go with either the nuuo or the ams, of those.

At that price though, Enhance ENS-5150 is $69 at ewiz. The black 80+ one, that is.

I would go with the Sunbeam;)

500w Xclio Goodpower (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817189005)

460w Xclio Stablepower (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817189013)

460w Sytrin/Nextherm (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817388003)

500w Hipro (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817174023) not really a serious contender here considering how far the topower p5 units have fallen

What about the epower zumax one? it is getting good reviews by those on newegg. The suun one seems to be getting poor reviews? of course the ams would be a good one, but is 460w enough? that xclio one looks decent also.. good price. yargh.. like to order today...

Take those Egg reviews with a grain of salt:p

I don't know what it is about the ZU series, but I don't trust them. I'd get the Hipro before the zumax.

take newegg's reviews with a large grain of salt. you can review any item you want on newegg without ever having done any business with them (you need an account, but how hard is that to set up?). The third review mentions BFG, which has nothing to do with the Sunbeam NUUO.

Zarich
01-12-2007, 03:42 PM
something that has me concerned about the sunbeam is in jonnys review he meantions the fan cracking and causing significant fan noise. As I began to read newegg reviews many of them meantion the cracking of the rear fan. that doesn't sound good.

only other thing I know to tell you at this point is increase your budget and order an ST50EF-plus from DeadeyeData.

CAD4466HK
01-12-2007, 03:47 PM
Well, Xclio or the Masscool, or the Enhance 5150:o
You can't be that picky dealing with $60 PSU's:p
If you don't like them, up your budget to say $75
Or like MrWicked said, the ST50EF is a very nice unit

Zarich
01-12-2007, 04:03 PM
well. I like that 500w xclio, that seems like a good ps.
Between the xclio and the ams which should I go with?

is the sunbeam gonna be better than both?

I'm sticking to my guns on the Sunbeam:)

Zarich

okay.. so I am understanding.. out of all meantion in the $60 range in this thread you guys think the sunbeam is the best?

That's my opinion:)
I've used a few in clients builds with stellar results:D
Others might differ in their views of this PSU

Zarich
01-12-2007, 06:43 PM
LOL okay.. hey my frys has this ultra V 600w on sale for $69.99 with a mail in rebate.. is that a decent psu at all?

jonnyGURU
01-12-2007, 06:57 PM
What is it AFTER the mail in rebate?

Zarich
01-12-2007, 06:59 PM
$20.

Which ps do you think I should get jonny.. I would really like a decent one, but not wanting to spend more than $60
I mean if the v-series is crap I dont want to get one. If the sunnbeam for $55 is really the best one I will grab that... I am just concerned about all the negative newegg reviews.

jonnyGURU
01-12-2007, 07:06 PM
I don't so much mind the 600W V-Series. It's based on the same Wintech platform as the X-Finity 500W, 600W, etc.

It's the 500W and lower that I don't openly recommend to people.

Since I don't count my rebate money until I get the check, I'd have to say the Sunbeam @ $55 is really good.

I really liked the Sunbeam, outside of the broken fan. But if there's a bunch of people on Newegg complaining about the same broken fan issue I had, maybe that's a sign to stay away. :(

Zarich
01-12-2007, 07:10 PM
Okay I called frys they got em... $69.99 for those v-series ps. is that better or worse than the sunbeam. What should I do? run down and buy one?

jonnyGURU
01-12-2007, 08:36 PM
I gave you my opinion.

Curious as to what the "experts" at Anandtech will tell you in the thread you started there. ;)

MrWicked1968
01-12-2007, 09:13 PM
just don't go ask the "experts" at XS. they'll just laugh at you and tell you that they wouldn't less than $60 for their power cord.

Zarich
01-12-2007, 10:24 PM
sorry.. I just dont want to buy a really crappy psu I am gonna have to replace in 6 months. Plus I don't want to fry my stuff. My truepower 430 has been running well for 3+ years.

Twas the experts at anand who sent me here.

jonnyGURU
01-12-2007, 10:35 PM
I didn't realize that it was the folks at Anand that sent you here, but I just noticed today that you went back to confirm the "final two" choices. ;)

I'll say it again: I think you'd be fine either way. I like them both. The Sunbeam is $5 less and is modular, but that cracked fan thing has me worried, although I'm sure it's not all that common (the Sunbeam used to be highly recommended on the now defunct DFI-Street.) On the other hand, the V-Series is really cheap once you get your rebate cash back.

So really, the choice is up to you at this point. Beyond that, you're just going to get people's personal opinions and not educated experiences.

Zarich
01-12-2007, 10:44 PM
well thanks for your help. I think the sunbeam is probably the better ps.. so I just have decide.. wait a week for newegg to ship it to me or buy the other now. new build is burning my patience... must play :)

I like the guys at anand because there is such a huge diverse group of people you can kinda get a large group of user opinions. But in the end it was just my utter impatience that caused me to post that there. ....

Thanks all for your assistance!!!!

Hey guys sorry I have another question.. has anyone heard of the
maxpower 550watt?
a computer shop near me sells it for 80.

jonnyGURU
01-13-2007, 05:59 PM
Don't know Maxpower. :(

Max Power - he's the man whose name you'd love to touch... but you mustn't touch...

Sorry, that just popped into my head and only annoying others with it could get it out :D

But I don't know about those units myself :(

Spectre

I think the company is actually 2theMax http://www.2themax.com/power_mp_alive.html

Oklahoma Wolf
01-13-2007, 06:14 PM
Got some more info - 2themax is one possibility, but there looks to be a seperate company by that name. From these two threads at badcaps, I don't think I'd use them:

guys if I upped my limit to $80 shipped is there a GOOD quality psu you would recommend? I can't get myself to buy the others cause I am just too worried about poor quality.

There's my recommendation.

jonnyGURU

You're only running a single 7950. It's not like your two last choices were Deer and Powmax. :D

Zarich
01-14-2007, 05:06 AM
err.. sorry jonny but I got the impression from everyone that the V-series stood for very crappy.

Question.. how come people say the sunbeam has no pfc yet on the box it says it has active pfc... why is that?

from your own review "Unfortunately, this PSU has no power factor correction and efficiency was only mediocre."

Yet look at the box on your review pick.... how bizzarre.

one more question.. do you HAVE to use the fan controller on the sunbeam? I would prefer to just stick a ps in and never hear from it again.

Edit for one last question:
would that sunbeam power an 8800gtx?

It is that modular thing that really has my brain going.. I mean I am using 6 cables on my psu right now.. all the rest are stuffed into a drive bay.

jonnyGURU
01-14-2007, 08:32 AM
"V" means "Value." They don't have you pay for things like titanium finish and FlexForce cables when all you need is a simple power supply. Like I've said three times now between this thread and the one at Anandtech, the 600W V-Series is actually exactly the same as an X-Finity.

But don't take my word for it. I don't know shit. I'm just a fan boy.

As for the Sunbeam; the APFC is only available in the European 230V only version. The switchable 115/230V version has no PFC. They use the same box for both.

You don't "have to use" the fan controller. The PSU works without it and the thermal controller in the unit always over-rides the controller any way.

And I wouldn't use either PSU for an 8800GTX. Then again, if I'm going to spend $400 for a video card, I think I can dig up at least $100 for a PSU.

But what do I know, I'm just a grumpy old know-it-all.

Zarich
01-14-2007, 01:39 PM
sorry jonny... dont know a single thing about the x-infinity line. I havent bought a ps in 3+ years and back then antec was on top.

$100 bucks huh..
okay I have been calling around my area.. what can I buy for $100 bucks... so here is what I have found
thermaltake purepower 600w for $100
Cooler master 550w for $100
antec truepower trio 550 for $106
sotech 600w for $110

yup .. thats about it.

well.. I know you all be horrible disappointed to see me go:D , but
I re-read this thread several times.. then re-read jonnys sunbeam 550 review.. then searched the net and read more reviews.. then looked at far more expensive options.. then finally.. bought a psu.

LOL.. the sunbeam just seems like a good all around psu, not the best by far, but definitly not junk.. and with it being on sale at newegg for $55 it just seemed tough to beat. So I grabbed one.... I am sure it will power my system just fine. Thanks for all your help!!!!!!

I am sure I made same of you do this : :wall:

:D :D
