about to buy a new PC from Build Your Box (http://www.buildyourbox.co.uk/), is getting a AMD 6 core cpu at 2.8Ghz better than a 4 core at 3.4GHz??

I'd recommend buying the components separately from a reputable seller, such as ebuyer or amazon uk

If you need help or you're just not good at computers, say your budget and the online parts stores you prefer (if you don't like ebuyer.com or amazon uk for some reasons) and we'll make you a configuration.

You can get better systems overall by getting parts and building everything yourself (and it's not that hard).

But to answer your question, it depends on the price and what you're doing with the system. Generally, yes, the six core should be better. But if you're only watching Youtube movies for example, it wouldn't be worth paying extra for it.

Depends on what you intend to use it for, in heavily multithreaded workloads(like 2D/3D rendering) the 6 core Thuban will outperform the 4 core Deneb, while in pretty much everything else the Deneb will do better(including gaming) while also consuming less power and achieving better overclocks.

However, buying an AM3 platform at this moment in time is a bad decision.. if you insist on getting something AMD just wait a few more weeks until the AMD Bulldozer launches(October 12).. or simply get the best solution available at the moment, and that is Sandy Bridge.

Agreed, as an AM3 user (and an AMD fan too), buying AM3 right now is a very poor choice. If you can get them to put an AM3+ board in, then that will leave you with the possibility of upgrading to Bulldozer when it releases. And whatever you do, just get the quad and save the money.

- FX-8150's price is 245$ (eight core)

- FX-8120 is 205$ (eight core)

- FX-6100 is 175$ (six core)

recommended retail prices - in UK expect about 15-25% extra (vat and customs and store profit).

AFAIK they overclock easily up to around 5 gHz on air coolers/ cheap water coolers

So yeah, I'd wait until the 12 also.
