I just bought one myself for sli rig, and don't mind the fact it's noisier under load compared to the seasonic m12. What I do mind, is that idle there is a continuous buzzing noise coming from it. Mate has it to on his silverstone. Oh well. Must be a common feature of these high end PSU's cause I also noticed the same buzzing on an enermax galaxy. Should have listened when I was told to keep my seasonic.

My Zeus has no such buzzing, might have a bad unit:o

I hope not.
I hear buzzing...it's not the fan, it's electrical....most people I showed it to could not hear it. But if you put your ear close to the back of the system you hear it. Hear it on my friends Zeus too. Maybe we are both unlucky.
These guys who I know are no psu experts mention a "faint electrical buzzing noise that has come to be a trademark of Silverstone supplies"
http://www.atomicmpc.com.au/article.asp?CIID=70505
Maybe I am oversensitive to noise.

Trust me;)
That is not "normal" operation for any PSU:p

The 700 or 750w PSU that ships on Dell Precision 490 systems emits a faint buzzing noise. The heavier the load the louder the buzzing. This seems to be normal operation for these psu's unless they are all faulty, and they all emit this noise. So I don't agree with your statement.
Now I noticed a similar noise on my Etasis, but truthfully I would descirbe it as more of a high pitched noise that some people can pick up and some can't. But it is clearly coming from within the psu itself. It's electrical and I can hear it, and the heavier the load the more noticeable it is. But again it is hard to notice. And I have noticed the same thing on Enermax Galaxy and Silvertsone Zeus psu's and to a lesser extent on Seasonic M12's. I know very little about the workings of psu's but surely they do make some noise besides fan noise ?

I'm sorry that's the way you feel:o
But I would be Goddamned if I was running any PSU that buzzed:p
That unit "would" be RMA'ed with a quickness;)
I've had experience with every PSU that you named{except the Dell, and that goes without saying} and have yet to hear buzzing from them, now the Tt TP I have heard buzzing from at least 3 of those:p
Or you just happen to have a cool ear like the Bionic Woman :p

Might be just loose coil winding. He did state it changes with load.
As we age high frequencies are less of an issue. ;)

I have tinnitus which drove me mad at first but now I don't notice it, hopfully that will happen to you and you won't hear it, I suppose though now you know it's there you will be looking for it, it's human nature.

I have decided to order another Etasis and rma the other one for a cash refund. It's just too noticeable now.

Before I rma this one - is it 100% certain that there should be no noise coming out of the back of the etasis ? Basically my one has the usual fan noise which you can hear when you open the case, but there is a constant electrical noise from the back. Because it is at a different pitch from the fan noise it it noticeable to me, and you can pinpoint it straight away as coming from the back of the etasis. Removing both gpu's and putting in an X600, the noise is almost gone. So it is definitely load related. I just don't want to end up having the company I bought the psu telling me this is normal operation and return it to me after charging me a big fat testing fee plus shipping to my credit card.

With the comp shut down, block the PSU fan with something non-conductive, now power-up. It the PSU noise still present? Yes.. RMA it with an electrical noise. Is the noise gone with the fan blocked? Yes..RMA it for a bad fan.

Well the noise is actually buzzing coming from whatever is just behind the back of psu grille. It's not the fan. Because it's at a different pitch from the case fans, it's very noticeable. I am ordering another Etasis this evening, and will rma this one.
By the way, I said the noise was like a buzzing. It's not as harsh. Sort of the same noise if you don't close a bottle of coke fully, and you can hear the gas escaping.
Then again as the load goes up the noise gets worse. It's now like a whining noise...like the noise you get from old crt's with certain colours or webpages, but louder.
It's definitely very irritating. Let's hope the next one is ok. I have been accused before though of having very acute hearing and picking up noises like rattles in my car noone else can hear, or fan noise. So we'll see what the next one is like.

I have had that "electronic" buzz noise on every PSU I've ever owned. However, after about two weeks or so of use it went away on every PSU. I don't know if it's just some components "breaking in" or what, but I'm not going to complain if the sound magically disappears :)

Buzzing can come from any number of sources. It won't help you directly but here is a post / thread I'm keeping an eye on, just might learn something.

Thier PSU forum is really worth a good looking over for those so inclined. :)

Cheers for that. So hes sorted it by changing a cap. Hmmm...should I even bother ordering another one and rma'ing this. Maybe this something that I have to live with and as the poster before you said, it might go away. To be honest I wouldn't have bothered making a fuss until I came to thse forums. Think I will will keep it for a couple weeks to see if it improves. Then rma time if not.

Well just fitted new Etasis - and zero buzzing, just the clicking from the fan but you need to put your head round the back of the pc to hear it.

Actually now that I think of it - it was. Good cube origin story. Not a patch on 1 or 2 I thought. But movies like Inferno, Deader, Prophesy, and Resurrection just didn't feel like HL movies anymore :)
