View Full Version : Hmm, the time has come
Thats right, it is time.
For a replacment of the shitty old P4. How does this sound:
eVGA 939 mATX SLI board + AMD3700+ : $168
Something like a GeForce 6200: About $40
Recycling the ram, hard drive, etc..
The only issue? a PSU. I have it running on a 300w FSP right now, I was just wondering if an FSP AX 400 is a good choice; If not, what would be a better choice, at ncix?

the Fortrons and Sparkles with with model numbers that begin with FSP are supposed to be better than the AX series. NCIX has an FSP400 Blue Storm but it's more expensive.
why buy an SLI motherboard then cripple it with a 6200?
It's only for the internets. ie: Email, MSN/aim, websites. If i could, i'd buy something even worse than a 6200, if i could find one.

x300 hypermemory...or you can save yourself the pennies and just get an integrated chipset like an xpress200 or nvidia 6100. SiS 761 is an integrated chipset for socket 939 as well.

the sli epox EP-8NPA SLi socket 754 had some great reviews for a cheapish motherboard, as a poss. alt., but do you really need sli just for the web?

If it's the AX400-PN, it's a 350W PSU. These are the same units as the old Blue Storms with a few updates. There are no current FSP models I'm really impressed with, except maybe the Zen and those few Epsilon based models with the ripple problem addressed (like the Zalman). I miss the old Teapo based FSP units :(
Edit - this (http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=19637&vpn=SST-ST360&manufacture=Silverstone%20Technology) one should do. The holiday season seems to have done a number on NCIX's supply for now - no Element models in stock that I can see.

The reason I chose that is caues it's a cheap combo. at NCIX, the 3700+ alone costs $130. The combo, $168.

Anything like that in 939? :) (no to the sli)

I has an FSP 300w in the P4 right now, getting a bit long in the tooth (I'm planning on putting it with another pc too), and it has all teapo's, big ass heatsinks, and it's perfectly suited to the pc it is in now. Oh well.
Hmm, that Silverstone looks good. Any other recommendations?

St50EF-Plus $79.05\Seasonic S12 430HB $86.00\Corsair 520HX $118.00
I pulled the trigger yesterday after studying the sight all weekend and talked to Jennifer, very nice to deal with.
I would, except that I have to have the pc finished very, very soon :(
Like, the day the parts arrive, soon. Which I haven't ordered yet.
I might just splurge on an ms ergo kb.. $30 with system purchase..

Asus Radeon X300se (http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=14640&vpn=EXTREME%20AX300SE-X&manufacture=ASUS)
this might be a better way to go as far as a discreet video card is concerned. turbocache and hypermemory both use system memory for their frame buffer, and if you're building a system without a lot of memory to begin with, you don't need your video using anymore than it needs to.
for that matter, you can go even cheaper and get a PCI geforce mx4000 (http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=21361&vpn=064-P1-NV91-LX&manufacture=eVGA) which will be more than adequate for an email/web surfing/dvd watching machine.

Might as well go with onboard video instead of those choices.

well, according to the OP, the motherboard and cpu are a package deal. and the mb doesn't come with onboard video.
aaHhhhhh !!! The psu recommended is a 20 pin.. I know i can stagger the pins, but will that be enough? Or should i go with a 24 pin, like the fsp-400 ?

I'm running this in my system right now.
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=17076&vpn=ATX-400-PN-B&manufacture=FSP%20GROUP%20USA
I opened it up and found that it was all Teapo caps. YMMV, of course.
Everything's ordered now. Hurray, I also got the ms ergo kb that i've always wanted.

Now at least you'll know that you'll be on par with MX4000's and S3's:p

x300se is about as good as a vanilla 9600. plus it's DX9 compatible, which the 4000 and S3 aren't.

The 9600 is 128-bit where as the x300se is only 64-bit;) ,and besides,
I was only rattling Bbq's cage:D :p
Oh, the p4's video card was an S3. An integrated 16mb one.
And to think, I uesd to play games on that..

Ouch:eek:
It's all here !!!
It's installing windoze at 57% right now. In the end, I went with:
A64 3700+
eVGA mATX SLI
Asus AX300SE
FSP/Sparkle ATX-400PN (dual 18a rails, to a max of 348w / 29a) <-- Holding up very well. 12v is slightly under, but within 2%. 120mm is pretty quiet, and it weighs about 4x what the old psu is. Of course, this pc is probubly drawing 200w, max, full load..
And I recycled:
Seagate 7200.9 80gb 2mb cache HDD
LG CD-RW
512mb Samsung TCCD
It's going VERY well.

It truly is a Doom 3 Dreamin' Machine.
It's very RUHHHHH. I'm VERY happy with the performance. It boots (from poweron to desktop) in under 20 seconds. It never lags, stutters, or slows down. Even with 512 ram, it's more than enough.
