View Full Version : Etasis 850w - loud blip ?

So I got my Etasis 850w yesterday. Out with the Seasonic M12 and in with this. Everything works fine till I power down my PC and I hear this loud blip/screech. Sounds like it is actually coming from the power button on the case !! It happens just as everything powers down. Literally a micro second after the screen shuts off.
First I think maybe one of my drives is on the fritz. But I plug out all my hard drives, opticals, fans etc.. Remove my souncard. Remove one of my G80's. Just one G80, memory, and cpu now. But still no joy. This loud blip which lasts about half a second still happens. It happens when I power down from within windows, or if I just bootup and hit the power button after post.
The only conclusion I can make is the psu is doing this as this is all that has changed. Unforutnately I have sold my Seasonic so can't be sure. I did notice the led on the back of the etasis when the system is powered off is lit orange, and green when the system is powered on, indicating everything is ok. I have run Orthos, 3dmark, Sisoft, HDTach etc..
Just wondering if anyone has heard of this happening before.
My config is QX6700,2gig Cellshock 8000C4,EVGA 680i,2xBFG 8800GTX,X-Fi,2XWD Raptors,2xSeagate 7200.10's,2xNec 7173A DVDRW, Noctua 120mm fans, Tuniq Tower.
thanks

Screech is probably from on-board speaker. The cause I don't know, could it be an attempt at trouble code? proper orientation on auxillery MB connection? Try reseating all P.S. connections. _ReeL

Hmm... I've got a couple eVGA 680i boards and never heard that coming from the speaker.
Weird.

Well I stripped the PC down, and tested it outside the case - first with an EVGA 680i mobo and then with an Intel Bad Axe 2. Tried different memory, cpu's, video card combinations. Different power leads even. It turns out it's the psu. When you shutdown - either in windows or using the power button the psu emits a high pitched shrill that lasts about half a second. No idea why. I have also noticed a slighly electrical buzzing but I hear that is common on silverstone psu's too and it depends on what way your head is turned as to whether you will actually notice it.
Anyway, should I be worried about this high pitched noise. My 12v rail is being reported by Intel Desktop Utils as 11.83  On the EVGA it's a bit low as well. Didn't test it properly yet.

it may be a cap discharging.

So hopefully nothing to worry about.

Try unplugging the case speaker

The case speaker is not plugged in.

So could it be the fan that is making the noise as it suddenly grinds to a halt ? Must take the top of the case off tommorrow and take a closer look at what happens. It certainly sounds like some sort of piezzo speaker but it is definitely coming from inside the psu.

Well.. there's no speaker inside an Etasis 850W. ;)

:)
Well I will try and straighten out all the cables I am not using..maybe I have loosened something by bending them back out of the way.
I will also take a look at the fan while the thing is shuttin down.
other then that..I suppose it's rma time. damnit.

Got to the bottom of it. It's the piezo speakers on the g80 cards. I accidentally left one of the pci-e cables unplugged and the same loud beep on bootup but continuous. With all the pci-e cables plugged in - tis grand until you shutdown. Just after the system shutsdown there is a beep for half a second..not even. I also tried an X600 which uses no pci-e connector and the system powers down without any noise.
So it seems to me the psu is cutting power to the video cards a fraction too early. Or is it possible I borked my G80's when taking them out of the board (same time I was installing new psu).
<edit> Seems to be a common problem, but I reckon it is psu specific. What is annoying is if I go into suspend the cards make this noise, and I have to reboot to come back out of suspend.

I have just spoken to 2 other people on another forum who bought the same Etasis psu and have the same problem. Also reported on some OCZ and Seasonics. Only happens with an 8800GTX card. Brand irrelevant.
Jonny - would you say this is a problem for the PSU maker or the video card manufacturer. What irritates me the most is the inability to use standby on my pc as I can never get back out of it.

I am not sure either the psu or the card company are liable in this instance, its just a querk...strange characteristic. Not sure if that consitutes any are faulty in any way. If its happening with multiple psu's it points MORE to the card.

I agree. Nvidia already broke the ATX spec on the length of the 8800GTX. Maybe they ignored something else. But there is not much chance of a fix from them I suppose. And I can always send my PSU back. Just hard to find something as good I think.

I have very little to offer, just a guess with no solution.
It sounds as if the bulk cap is draining audibly at shut down. This cap provides the power for hold-up time.
This is an odd issue and maybe someone can inquior at CES ;)

I am 100% sure it is the piezo speaker on the GTX that is making the noise. So the PSU is draining the cap very quickly and the GTX still expects power so beeps. What bother me is it happens when going into suspend as well and I cannot recover.
Anyway, someone over on nvnews has the beep after shutdown problem up on youtube. Maybe I will try to send back my psu. Not sure what grounds I have.

I’ve experienced the same sound when shutting down with an Evga 8800GTX and a Silver Stone 850 (ST85ZF) PSU.
With my PCP&C 1000Watt SR in the same system the sound is gone?

So the big question is what is different between the PC P&C you have where there is no beep, and say the Etasis/Silverstone that has this issue. Is it just that the power drains faster from the Etasis ?

That’s what I was hoping to find out here in this forum. I’m about to send this power supply back because of a broken SATA connector. I was tempted to test the same system with the 1000OP I have in my other machine but I don’t feel like tearing it apart right now.
I just tried a PC Power and Cooling 750 Quad this afternoon in the same system mentioned above. No squealing from the 8800GTX on shut down with this PSU.
The Silver Stone 850 is obviously doing something different when shutting down.
