View Full Version : Saitek Eclipse II

Due to unforeseen circumstances beyond my control(redundancy? I don’t think so…) I recently needed a new keyboard. The “M” quit working and I was tired of typing in code: – “the letter between “L” and “N” – like it was F-ing Prince. I work/play a lot at night and wanted backlit keys.

My previous victim was an “eluminX” brand board which had served me ok for a couple of years, so it owed me nothing. The eluminX has transparent keys with opaque letters/digits, which is just plain wrong. This Saitek unit is properly built with opaque keys with, I guess, translucent digits you’d call ‘em.

The Eclipse II is a nicely weighted piece with large non-slip pads situated on four protubances situated at the corners. Four corners. Funny how that worked out… I could have done without the added size the aforementioned protrubances added to the keyboard.

It also comes with four rocker type switches and a rheostat situated in the upper right corner to control multimedia and the lighting. Top left switch is forward/backward in a playlist; top right is for volume. Bottom left is play/pause and stop. Bottom right controls mute and cycles through the backlighting. Brightness rheostat is nestled in the center.

The lighting seems adequate without being perfect. But what is?(now that was rhetorical!) The choices are: none, blue, red and purple. I was surprised that purple gave me the best night-sight. Was expecting red to be best. Then I realized that red + blue = purple; so there is twice as many l.e.d.s lit in purple! A d’oh moment. Blue is pretty, but useless for my purposes.

The action is average with no real “clickety”, which I happen to like; but with a rather long throw. Which I don’t. It surprised me, pleasantly, I might add, that no added software is needed for the multi-media controls. Never had a keyboard with this feature. Mostly I like it. Strangely, though, using the forward/backward playlist controls also activates scroll. Hmmm…

Scoring: I apologize for not having the proper test equipment…(that was facetiousness)
The good – I can type in total darkness with no Mavis Beacon skills; Added media functionality with no added software; Letters, numbers and such appear on the monitor when I push the correct and corresponding key.
The bad – Scroll weirdness using the fore/back media control.
The mediocre – Key “feel”…Meh…

In my personal scoring system the Saitek Eclipse II keyboard gets One middle-finger up. Pretty good, more good than bad. My system is backwards from the other boys’. No fingers is perfect; does what the marketing dweebs sat it will with no fuss, no muss. Five fingers and one shouldn’t let it out of its shipping container in your home. If you have any questions just ask. Sir_ReeL

Weird. My eluminX has black letters on the keys.

It's over four years old and the only thing wrong with it is the space bar doesn't always spring back up, but it still works.

It's actually one of the first ones because it's the sample eluminX sent to TCWO when they were trying to get us to sell their product. :D

I also have a no-name light up keyboard. THAT has opaque letter and the light is so dim you can't see it unless all of the lights in the house are out. But it has that neat "ergo" shape to it and has always worked well even though the keys have no click to them. My biggest complaint is that there is zero weight to it. They should throw lead in there just so it stays put on the desk.

I have an old IBM keyboard with enough heft to beat bears to death for shitting in the woods. _ReeL

I have a couple of those "KLICK" IBM keyboards left, too.

I found, however, that the E036 series from Keytronic has even better keys, so that's what I use now.

I have one of those Saiteks and typing is very slow on them compared to the high end.

sent to TCWO

TCWO as in Tampa FLA?

Heh..I found your forums thru a [H] thread..and then noticed that! LOL I'm in Clearwater and used to buy all my stuff..which wasn't tons back then..but I bought it from TCWO because i loved getting internet prices and being able to drive over and pick up for the instant gratification!

I just ordered a boutique rig... frankly over building it myself at this point.. Maingear.... nice to get one nicely wired and stuff..i always hated the wiring of the mobo to the case the most..

They included a color matched saitek... but Im sure it isn't the backlit one.. I wreck keyboards to fast..mostly from eating at my desk...while I raid in Everquest.. :P But a nice backlit one has always had my interest... if only it wasn't for the lumps of pizza cheese...

Right on!

go bucs =/ Maybe next year! :wall:

Are you ex TCWO involved in retail now? or support.. or..non IT

Are there any reasonable and reliable local shops that I should look at for stuff..that picked up where TCWO left off?

My local career started at Software Spectrum off MLK..supporting AOL.< bleh> then CGS, then Sykes, then luckily got my break out of help desks to Verizon Directory in St. Pete, then contract at Bay Pines ( Dept of VA )..now..got federal position as a Sys Admin with Dept. Of VA @ Bay Pines. Job permanence is nice $$

Software Spectrum? LOL! Someone else here used to work their supporting AOL. I used to work there when it was Atlantic Communications doing lead generation for Lucent Data Systems. Now they do Dell support out of there. I have a friend who worked there for about a week and then quit. :D

Remember when that was an outlet mall? They had the Bugle Boy store. :D Whatever happened to Bugle Boy?

yea..I remember the outlet mall..LOL

Bugle Boy! HAHA

Levi's ftw!

And yea..Software Spectrum ...heh..they were fine..but supporting AOL was a ..err.mind numbing experience! Wasn't even about helping people really..was more like.."yea bob..uninstal and re install..and call back if ya need too.." LOL then..xfer to the Telemarketing queue! haha But it was a launch platform for my career!

CGS ( Computer Generated Solutions ny based outsorurce hd ) was ok.. nt4 support for Allstate offices, used Remotely Possible mostly... Sykes ( situated in a high rise in Downtown Tampa )was a small hd supporting Siebel Systems ( Oracle based CRM was a NICE app .. not bad at all.. and Sales Reps hardware as well )

So.. any retailer's local..or you use the web now then?

Also, any insider infoz why TCWO crapped so suddenly and boom? ( I heard embezzlement was the cause ? )
