Has it really hit the end of the road? Has productions of them stopped completely? I don't see NewEgg stocking up on them anymore.
I don't know if it is offical bcuz I haven't seen any news about discontinuing the that product line.
Just wondering what everyone's insight on it is.

They will still be around for a little while.......s754 has been declared dead more times than a Monty Python gag

About 1/4 of my clients are still running 939, and a small percentage are still running s754, s478, s462, and I still have 2 clients running s370:p
I only have 1 client on AM2{5200+}the rest is s775
But you can still find CPU's for all the sockets I listed new;)

I was thinking about plopping a $154 opty165 into an $50 a8n-sli premium but the cost is so similar compared to a C2D that seems to kill the opty in all the benchmarks TomsHardware showed that I dunno if I should even bother.
Mebbe stick a 3700+ San Diego and let it go at that.
What are everyone's thoughts?

I don't have $600 to spare LoLz. Most I'm willing to go is $300 and I need to get ram hehe.

What's your specs?
I just came from a 3700+ Sandy E4{1.35v}that was good for 2.7@ stock volts and nice and cool;) of course I strip my A64's naked:p

I don't understand your question. The pc hasn't been built yet. I will be running it on an a8n-sli platinum motherboard with corsair value pc3200z and an ATI x300 128m card.
I got my case and psu and a 250gig sata hd.
I dunno how much the AMD DC or SC cpu will tax the psu compared to my p4 prescott. I still wanna make use of my antec 480watt.

Your power usage will be decreased with a A64 or Opty sc or dc vs. your
Pressy;)
As for your TP 480 or Neo 480, it will have the balls, but you might want to go ahead and check out the condition of the caps;) especialy if it's been thru the grinder and more then a year old :)

It's an Antec TrueBlue .... does it make any difference? I think it's 24 amps.

Loaded with shit caps that hate the heat;) it's a TP 480 with a LED fan,gen 1 and iirc you have 28A, mine has 26A +12V
Crack her open and check for swollen caps;)
IMAO, I woulden't run that PSU with any modern PC:p
But, the decideing factor is you and your checkbook;)
I take a risk every day with my TP 430 gen 1, on my server running 8 drives:crazy:

Should I send it to Jonny? Hehehe~
I guess I will run it on an Ultra V 400watt psu. I'm too poor for anything!!! That's why just debating over an opty or a cheezy amd 3700+. I can't stand my prescott system corrupting my data.
Help me decide guys.
AMD 3700+ Retail - $79
Opty 165 Retail - $154
Opty 170 Retail - $189
Opty 175 OEM - $179
I already have a Zalman 9500 AM2 from CompUSA for $45 from their sale which I can return.
P.S. All advice are appreciated - It will be replacing my unstable Prescott. This system will end up being a hard disk server mid 2008 hopefully but will be my main rig for EVERYTHING til then.

What's cheezy about a 3700+ Sandy:confused:
That cheezy proc would mop the floor with your Pressy:p

I wanna prepare it for Vista and I don't think it will be running too smoothly by the time SP 1/2 comes out for it but I dunno if I can justify the price cost compared to the C2Dz which you have mentioned. Looking at the Tomhardware cpu comparison charts. The price and power of the C2Dz whomp out the X2, FX, and Opty chips. I just don't have the money for new ram and motherboard or this would be a no thinker.
I don't mean to insult it but I highly doubt it has the horse power for it in 3yrs.
I still have a bunch of Pentium 2z in my house which I havent even tossed out yet.
P.S. Can ya help me decide from the previous post listed? You'll be my saviour ^_^

The Opty 165 would be a good start for dc support in Vista, but be serious:p
WHAT WILL have the horsepower 3 years from now?
I'm sure there will be C8D by then, so don't sweat the small stuff, who knows what kind of CPU demands the next gen of DX10 games will have:confused:

Ok .. I'm confused now. It may be by your delivery. You're saying to get the opty 165 or dont bother cuz 2yrs from now it will be too slow? So, just get the 3700+ and get a dx10 video card?
Can you be more detailed?

I ment it like this,
If you want to go the dc route with 939, the Opty 165 is a good choice for your budget.
You asked if it would have enough "HORSEPOWER" 3 years from now, I can't
honestly answer that without my trusty crystal ball:p

Now's the stupid question - Should I go return the Zalman or just plop it on? hehe.
I may try OC'ing the 165 and it will be my first time doing it with my corsair DDR 400 value ram =oP

I'll back up the Opty argument. I just got a 165 last week. As you know, these things run stock at 1800. I've gotten mine up to 2880 Prime stable, but my cooling solution isn't up to par, so I'm running it at 2700 until I can get my cooling sorted out. Sweet little chips. :)

I hate to see 939 go, my AN8-SLI has had a very good run though.
Speaking of "dead" sockets, just got a 1.4ghz pentium 3 Tualatin for my moms 5 year old computer for $45 on ebay. Works like a charm, thank god her motherboard(even without a AGP slot) was an VIA somethingapollo-T(as in tualatin).
She has a nvidia 6200 256mb and 1.5gb of ram, think it could pass for Vista?
IIRC, isn't the 170 one of the "sweet spots" when it comes to OC'ing? Seems I recall reports of folks pushing them to 3 GHz..

Yea my friend (djBon2112 on [H]) just bought a used opty 170(de-lidded) which seems like it could hit 3+GHz, mind you he is on water, and because his PSU is holding him back he's running at 2.81GHz atm 24/7 till he gets a better PSU.
Personally I have a AMD Athlon X2 4400+ S939 running at 2.6GHz on air, hoping to get at least 2.8 out of it on water (lidded) once I get my water set up. Its running on my A8R32-MVP Deluxe which I got the day they were released :D That motherboard has given me a good run so far.
I don't think I'm gonna upgrade my MB/VID/RAM/CPU (just about everthing :P) till the R600 refresh (R680 or w/e) and the AMD Quad Core (Barcelona or w/e) come out :) (Can you tell I'm a huge AMD/ATi fan yet :P)

I have an opty 170 running 2.9ghz fully stable running on air (TT BT). I also have an opty 144 @3.2GHZ fully stable on air (TT BT). These are still great CPU's. If you look around you can find good deals on these and mobos which make a great cheap system.
