Moving in with my fiancee, and I'm going to be putting together a media center PC around some parts I have. I'm looking to buy a socket 939 board, preferably a microATX board. I need one with PCI-E, and a PCI slot preferably a couple of slots down from the PCI-E, as I will probably be putting in a sound card.

I'd also prefer it to have 4 memory slots, but that's not as hard a requirement. I already have a few socket 939 processors including 2 A64 3000+'s, and an X2 3600+, my lapped 4-pipe stock AMD heatsink (this (http://www.madshrimps.be/articles/article/399/AMD-Athlon-64-Stock-Heatsink-with-4-Heat-Pipes-Tested/0) one), a 320GB WD hard drive, a 2GB set of Geil Ultra Platinum PC3200, and a few other odds and ends.

Let me know if you have anything, I'm trying to get this built in a bare-bones form, fairly soon and finish it over time.

The prices for 939 boards on ebay are depressing.

Yeah they are. I have a major problem spending that much money for a heap of "untested" (read: broken) boards.

Cool, yeah I'm still looking. The pickings are slim right now on ebay and local sales.

All I could find was a mobo that a friend has; it's a full-sized ATX SuperMicro board (I think?) with no 16x PCI-Express slot (like you'd use for a modern video card), but it has 2 std PCI slots, a big PCIX slot (I think it's called "PCIX"; look at the pic below, it is one of the longer white slots), and a slot that looks just like a 16x PCI-Express video slot, except it's backward -the "notch" separator is at the back of the slot, not the front- and it's a bit shorter than a 16x PCI-Express video slot. It has 4 RAM slots (I think DDR, not DDR2) and 2 ethernet ports. I made a decent attempt at finding drivers for the board but couldn't find anything (at my friend's house; I don't have the model number of the board handy; IRIC, there was no "true" model number printed on the board; I used whatever numbers were printed here-and-there and was basically unsuccessful). If you're still interested (I think you'd be better off passing on this board and hitting eBay), let me know and I'll find out what my friend wants for it.

I found the MB at the SuperMicro site: http://www.supermicro.com/Aplus/motherboard/Opteron/HT1000/H8ssl-i.cfm

The weird slot is the black slot immediately to the left of the CPU socket and it isn't mentioned on the SuperMicro site (??weird??). I have no idea what kind of slot it is, and you'll probably say "you're a stooge dlb, it's a PCIexpress video slot" but it isn't. We tried more than once to get a card in there and it is totally impossible. The slot is about a half-inch too short, and the separator is at the back of the slot; a video slot would have the separator at the front of the slot. There appears to be no driver support for this board for XP or newer; SuperMicro has one driver hosted for "MIMO". If you're running an older OS, they do have some drivers available.

(BTW - these boards seem to sell in the $200US range - YIKES! If my friend discovers that this board is "worth" that much, he'll probably have a freekin' heart attack!)

That's a server board. Why would he need that? The slot you're referring to is a proprietary 1U IPMI, it's Supermicro's standard. It's mostly used for NICs such as this one (http://www.supermicro.com/products/accessories/addon/aoc-1uipmi-lang.cfm). The board has an on-board ATi Rage XL with 8 MB of VRAM, which is plenty for a board of this type and application.

I got my old Asus A8N-LA that i used after my Sapphire Advances 3200(580X) broke. Its an HP based board that use the Nvidia Nforce 430 (http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=A8N-LA-WB).

I got 2 Sticks of 1GB A-Data DDR 400mhz and An Athlon X2 4200+ 2.2GHZ in it also.

Don't know if this meets what you need but its been a good board for me up until i replaced it for my current AM3 System. I was going to hold on to it so i could make it into a HTPC or OpenNAS box but i don't think i'll be getting around to that any time soon.

That's perfect, how much do you want for it? I have a processor, and I just found my 2GB set of G.Skill black PC4000, so I really just need a board.

Nevermind for now. My fiancee dumped me today. Too depressed to care about much in the computer tech world.

This is why most techies choose to stick to their imaginary girlfriends as long as possible.

You chose to open up to and care about someone, and then they decided they won't do the same for you. It's tough, it makes you question yourself, your actions, and your decision making abilities. The fact that you shared the info here means that either she made a good call, or that you're willing to overcome your newly found emptiness... I hope it's the latter. And don't worry, it's a cross between a habit and an addiction, and as such is accompanied by withdrawal symptoms. Friends can help lessen the impact; and for many, so can tech. Also, ethanol, preferably highly concentrated and with a good aftertaste.

Take care, and heal soon...
