View Full Version : Should I swap my S12 700w for Tagan 900w Turbojet

So I am looking to upgrade my psu and need some advice.
Right now running Intel Bad AxeQX6700, 1x8800GTX, 2x750gig 7200.10's, 1 optical, X-Fi, TVTuner card, Wifi usb dongle, 2gigs ram, 4 x1200rpm 120mm fans.
But I am adding at least 1 more hard drive (150gig raptor, a 2nd G80, and changing mobo out for a 680i which consumes more power then my current model. So not sure if 700w Seasonnic will handle this with ease.
Was considering going for the highly rated Silverstone Zeus ZT85ZF, but was just offered a straight swap for a Tagan 900w Turbojet. Specifically it's the Tagan TG900-U95 900W not the U96 that is sli certified.

I don't see any reviews of this on this site and have no clue about this psu.
What should I do ?

What S-12 700 do you have? Maybe M-12 700.
You have 56A on 12V rail. Do you believe that even 2x8800GTX will use those Amps? Nope.
If you have an M-12 700 keep it. You'll be fine.
BTW, just for my curiosity, why in the name of God you want another 8800GTX? Even one is more than your CPU can handle, but two?

NO!
Keep the Seasonic.

+1 for Seasonic.

Yes. It's the Seasonic M12 700w.
Well - thanks guys. I really respect your opinions and will keep the Seasonic. Just out of curiosity - will I be pushing it to it's limit and running that 60mm fan really loud as say compared to the Silverstone 850w which I imagine would be under less stresss and possibly run quieter, although I get the impression that the Silverstone is not anywhere near as quiet as the Seasonic at idle. Forgive the noobish question.
To answer the other question - I am adding a 2nd G80, because my brother in law recently one an Alienware sli rig at a corporate lan party and his is simply giving me a G80 gratis :) So basically all I will need is the 680i board and I am good to go.
As for 1 G80 being as much as my cpu can handle...maybe so, but quad core gaming is on the horizon hopefully (valve), and I run games at 1920x1200 with 16x QAA.

You will be pushing it to it's limit?
I can run a QX6700 and a pair of 8800GTX's on a 600W. Not sure how long it will run (heat) but it'll run.
I have a quad father with a pair of 8800GTS's and that thing won't even boot (it'll post, but that's about it) with the handful of GOOD 600W units I have handy. But it is running, as we speak, with an M12 700W. ;)

Cheers.
So does that mean with say 2x8800gtxs, 2 sata drives, and a QX6700, that it will result in that noisy 60mm fan screaming away ? That is why I was thinking of getting the Silverstone 850w as I thought with more headroom it would run quieter.
And just another query. The Tagan 900w has 72amps on the 12v rail (I have been told). Is this another Topower built model which if I am reading the forums correctly has ripple issues, crossloading and cannot reach the 900watts as it starts dropping off at 25 degrees ? Or am I way of there ?

In my opinion, the 60MM and 120MM on the Seasonic is still quieter than the two 80's on the Silverstone. Not to say that the Silverstone is loud, but the Seasonic certainly is not.
And yes, Tagan is Topower. Although I can't say really if the 900W has any ripple or all or can or can not do 900W. I would never say that without actually trying it myself. But it is Topower, so it's not exactly on the top of my list. :D

Cheers.
I will let it rip with the Seasonic and if it looks dodgy then I can look at changing to something more powerful. Thanks.

Tape a pocket thermometer over the PSU's air discharge, if temps are close to 50C, find out why. Is the case well vetilated? Are ambients high? (generally not in the UK :) ) High temps kill capacitors in PSUs.
Seasonic uses Nipponese caps and they are considered the longest lived with the better performance.
Note: In SoCal ambients can reach 45+C, even near the coast.

In my opinion, the 60MM and 120MM on the Seasonic is still quieter than the two 80's on the Silverstone. Not to say that the Silverstone is loud, but the Seasonic certainly is not.
I too would go with the M12 700:D
jG, AFAIK, iirc, the Zeus 850 only has one 80mm fan:p

It seems everyone says I should stick with the Seasonic and I reckon I probably will. It's modular, is 100% sleeved and is very quiet which are big pluses.
My only worry was that with a 2nd G80 the 60mm fan would kick up a racket thereby making it louder then say the Silverstone 850w. From the review I read over on silentpcreview, once the 60mm fan on the M12 starts up (which it would once 300w consumption was reached), there is no actualy way to slow it down. It stays on even when you are idling in windows (after a gaming session). You have to reboot your system for it to reset. I have actually noticed this throbbing they talk about.
See section 6.

As I have not used the Silverstone 850w, at what point would those 80mm fans kick up a racket. I assume it would get loud running G80's in SLI.
Incidentally I visited my friend yesterday who is running just an 8800GTX, and a few harddrives like me and I found the noise from his Enermax 1000w psu to be unacceptable. Definitely noticeable over his quiet 1000rpm case fans, and it positively screamed once he started gaming. So if these noiselevels are a characteristic of Tier 1 PSU's perhaps I am better off sticking with what I have, as recommended by the people on this thread.
By the way I am considering the Lian Li A10B case which can take 2 PSU's. I suppose if running G80's in SLI was too much for the Seasonic or it ran too loud, I could split the load and buy another ?
<edit>I just read a handful of reviews of the Zeus, and even with 1 G80 it gets loud (at least loud for me). Just listening to the recording over on Overclock3d.net of it under load is enough to put me off. Thanks for everyones advice. </edit>

One 80MM... Ok. Sorry. Hard to keep track. ;)
OP: You're exhibiting the symptoms of restless wallet syndrome. Use the Seasonic. It's more than enough power. I just used the same M12 700W that I was using to set up the Quad Father w/ 2 x 8800GTS cards and score > 12K on 3DMark to do it all over again on a QX6700 w/ a pair of 8800GTX's. No problems.
I doubt you'll ever need more than that PSU, but if you ever do come back at that time because the selection of product available to you and the prices they are available at changes on a monthly basis.

Heh, I have to spend my Christmas money on something :)
(It's going to be a Lian Li A10B or Silverstone TJ09)
