View Full Version : The Ultimate power supply.
This isn't the "I want a jiggawatt psu with massive bling bling for $2. type of thread. It's the Realistic, what would be the ultimate power supply for you thead.
I want:
-Modular. Not entirely modular, just everything except the ATX.
-Long cables. again, P180.
-Sleeved cables. Just normal nylon/plastic webbing, with good heatshrink, the last 3~ inches of the wires on both ends painted black. Since most manufacturers just leave the last bit unsleeved. and maybe a few black zip-ties. I don't want those snake-skin plastic coated ferrite ringed cables.
-Black. I don't want a titanium-black with neon green casing, I just want standard flat black.
-NO LEDS. I don't want to be disturbed in my sleep.
-Fan grilles. I don't want the overblinged fan grilles with 5 fruits, I just want standard, wire grilles in silver.
-Single rail. I don't want to be limited by multiple rails. Great idea, crappy execution.
-OEM packaging. I don't care about a box that holds it, i just wnat it to ship with a plain cardboard box, with everything in it. Sorta like Thermalright.
And that is what I want. What about you?

I already have it - Silverstone ST56ZF. Incredibly well built Etasis made server oriented monster of a PSU. Not that quiet, but I've never been a silence nut.
I fully expect it to outlast every other component in my system except maybe the case. Only step up for me is a Zippy server unit ;)

I think you might be asking a little much. but I did find one that seems to match your requirements.
600w Coomax EZ wire modular (http://www.xoxide.com/coolmax-600w-ez-wires-modular-power-supply.html)
yeah, I know it's a coolmax, but it's the only one I can find with a single 12v rail, black case, no led, sleeved wires, etc.
I would have suggested the 520w OCZ Modstream, but it has a blue LED.

I think the Corsair would be good for you. Me?
I like
Modular
Sleeved cables
400W or so
Silent
Any color that isn't reflective "bling"
Standard size
Actually, the closest to what I want is the Corsair HX520/620. Almost. Just needs the single rail. In fact, I think i could do without even the single rail if it's in the case of the corair hx520/620.

I've got mine.
Engineering sample Ultra X3 700W.
Single 12V rail (42A,) quiet 130MM fan, modular, FlexForce cables, 85% efficient, APFC. What more do I need?
Of course, you guys are in the dark until Q1 2007. :D

Yeah... RIIIIGHT!!! ;)Box art isn't important, Ultra can always email us something.
With +12V@42A (504W) this is between the Corsair 520W & 620W, close to the PC P&C 610W &
right in the mix with the Antec Trio's. Right in the middle of the hot "new" highend market.
I'll send you an email.
Thanks,
Dave

Is it the same OEM as the X2?

I have to say that I'm really impressed with the new Toughpower 750 I played with. I've seen one other PSU that held the rails as steady and it was a PCP&C 850SSI. That was the single loudest PSU I've ever seen.

Sorry Dave. But you can't throw the Antec Trio in with present company for obvious reasons. :) Can't let you do it. :D

Yeah. That a really solid performer. It's just to bad I can get a firm answer on what the combined 12V continuous output is so I can put it side by side with a contender and say, "this is a good PSU, because...."
I figured if I got a unit direct from Thermaltake instead of off the shelf I could get some support with it (a liason to bounce questions off of like I have with Silverstone, Corsair, Seasonic, Ultra and OCZ) but I got squat. :(

The combined rails are rated for 60A. It says it on the box and in the manual. Could be why they're not saying anything, I know my first thought would be "RTM" if it was me.

Yeah, I know it's in the manual. Remember this:

;)
But we also know that's "peak" and that the 12 second rule apparently applies to it since I couldn't get it to run with a 60A load on the 12V rail once the PSU was installed in the hot box. What I want to see is a sustained or continuous rating on the 12V rail. Even at 25C it's not 60A. :(

I honestly think that they believe it'll do 60A, could be a bit of a mis-communication between Tt and CWT though.
CWT: "This will do 60A peak on the 12V rails." Tt: "So max 60A on the 12V rails?" CWT: "Yes, peak of 60A." Tt: "OK, 60A max load it is."
I wouldn't be surprised if CWT never gave them a continuous rating on the 12V.

A Zippy unit that was modular and as quiet as a seasonic. Not likely to ever happen but oh well...

Me neither - CWT is famous for it. For a while there they were actually forthcoming about rating their units at 25 degrees, but I'm not sure they even go that far anymore. IIRC their own quad 12v equivalents to the Toughpower don't have a combined 12v rating either.
