Hey jonnyguru posters :). I was recommended this site by another poster from a different forum when I asked what PSU I should get for my new system I am trying to put together. I have no idea how to find the "A"'s on +12v rails and how much wattage my system will consume. He said if I posted my specs you guys could help me... well here we go and nice to meet all of you!

Are you planning on SLI:confused:

yeah oops forgot to add that, ill be planning to go sli in the future but not currently..

I'm sure you want modular,I would say the Corsair HX620, or if you want more juice and don't mind non-modular, ST75ZF or ST85ZF, would allow more
options in your future:)
check out
DeadeyeData for hot deals on Silverstone PSU's:D
Welcome to GURUland:)
You might have to do some modding to get either one of those Silverstones in that case, but the Corsair will be fine

thx for the welcome :)
honestly i really have no idea what modular means.. im a completely helpless when it comes to psu's >< the thing is i dont even know how much my computer would consume in wattage...

With modular, you only use the cables that you need, with non-modular, you have to become handy with zipties and hideing cables behind your motherboard, because your stuck with having all of them in your case, longer cables mean more to hide, but with your case, you should have plenty of room:)

lol those look scarey CAD but i see the difference now thx :)
for the Corsair HX620 would the 620W be sufficient for my setup?

12-20-2006, 11:36 PM
IMAO I would think you would be fine with that setup, as long as you don't start adding more fans, drives, lights, cigarette lighters,USB probes, alarm systems, fan controllers, but then again, I've seen more, run on less;)

LOL ok thx again think ill get the Corsair HX620 :)

Not sure why you'd want to torture people with a bunch of Newegg links forcing them to open up 8 browser windows to figure out what your build is, instead of just listng your hardware.... but I fixed your post.
If you're not planning on runnig SLI, CAD's suggestion is a goo one.

You really don't think SLI is possible with his build and the HX620?
As I said before, I 've seen more run with less:p
I know two people, personally, running SLI'ed 8800GTX's with the HX620:D
Both parties have more drives and fans, ect.
But I'm sure you have your reasons;)

Let's just say, it will work with SLI now, but if SLI is a potential upgrade path, I'm going to assume that this is going to happen when Vista is released, DX10 and the games that can utilize it. At that point, I don't think it'll handle it.

I agree on that, but who knows how long that will be, and who's to say
that most people will migrate to Vista anyways?
If they want to play the DX10 titles when they come out, they will have no choice, but being as the G80 kills everything else in DX9, people might be slow to upgrade.
Look how long it took XP to gain a following after WME frelled things up and
W2k only required 64megs of ram without shitty Luna.
I for one will wait to the DX10 titles are abundant and Vista gets it's "full"
driver cab. before I migrate;)

So what do you both think on how a HX 620 would handle this following setup ?:
FANS: 5 to 6 Scythe S-Flex SSF21E (1200rpm@12V) 120mm
HDD:2 Maxtor Diamond Max 10 250GB Sata-II 16MB 7.200rpm in RAID 0
CPU: Intel C2D E6600
CPUCOOLER: Artic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro
MOBO: Asus P5N32-E SLI
RAM: 2x1 GB of DDR2-800/PC6400 (not thought of which brand yet/honestly no clue)
VGA: 2x 8800 GTS
DVDrw: 1x NEC AD-7170 18x DVD-RW Dual Layer
SOUND: Creative X-Fi Xtreme Music
no OC planned maybe a little later when I carefully learn how
I guesstimate using a Corsair HX 520 with only one 8800 GTS is sufficient, yet when I'll go SLI, would the HX 620 be enough under Vista/DX 10 conditions?
I see ono Slizone.com that both Corsair's are not certified but what's your take on that?
Should I wait until who knows when Corsair will contract Seasonic to take a copy of the M12-700 turn to a 105° capped Corsair HX 720 ?:o Thank you

hey again, sorry jonnyg i didnt have any intent on torture its just this was the way people linked there specs on another forum i was in... ill be sure not to do it again next time ><
hey CAD i initially said I was going to go with the corsair but I changed my mind again and decided to get the..
PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750 EPS12V EPS12V 750W
Im just being paranoid and I have to agree with jonny i might need more power in the future :)

For the GTS in SLI, I think the HX620W would be just about enough. I think the GTX just has the potential to push things a little bit beyond what that PSU can do.
yoops: Personally, I think an M12-700W is a better value. Or even a Silverstone Zeus 750W or 850W if you want my opinion and have to buy something absolutely today.
CPU: Intel C2D E6600
VGA: 2x 8800 GTSCPU's TDP is 65W, consumption figures in 8800GTS reviews have been under 120W which would make under 300W.
Rest of the parts consume little compared to these biggest power hogs (well, Conroe ain't such), 100W should be much more than enough for rest.
For GTX SLI PC (C2D X6800) Anandtech measured ~520W as peak wall consumption which would be roughly 440W assuming very high 85% PSU efficiency.

Right, but it neither makes nor contradicts my point.
Nobody has benchmarked or measured power consumption of these cards to their full potential. They simply can't. I personally would rather not find myself replacing a PSU 1 year down the road if I'm in the market for one today.

I don't need something right away I have about 1 week..

And FYI... I only measured 455.9W coming from the wall on the QX6700 w/ two 8800GTX's running 3DMark2006.
Assuming the Ultra 1kW PSU I'm using is only 80% efficient at this load, that would mean my DC output is only 364.72W. ;)
Naturally, I expect there to be a 3DMark2007 w/ DX10 support that will push the cards harder. I will do it again at that time.

jonnyg i looked over the M12-700W and im a little concerned... it was listed as SLI for 8800 GTS not gtx... But if you say it's good enough for 8800GTX than ill go with your advice :)

Right. Because it doesn't show enough amps on the 12V rail. It's not like nVidia tried it and it failed. They paper cert PSU's before they even categories them.
