View Full Version : Reparing a blown Power Supply - is there a fuse ?

Hello All;
I made a really dumb mistake twice in about 3 weeks. The first time, I didn't know but the second time (Today), I just didn't think.

I was working on my PC and I plugged in the DVD-ROM's Power cable while the PC was still on. The power immediately shut off, and the PC wouldn't turn on again. I know from my first experience that this burnt out the power supply so I am sure that is what happened today too. Everytime I do this, I end up paying $50 for a new power supply.

My question is - do most power supplies have a user-replacable fuse ? If they do, I am quite confident that the fuse blew rather than a component. I'd rather pay one dollar or less for a new fuse than $50 for a whole new power supply.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Tim

Replacing the fuse will void your warranty, unless you don't care about such things, what brand of PSU are you dealing with?
Some brands solder the fuse into place:eek:
If your still under warranty, RMA it;)
If not, check it out with a DMM and don't be scared to crack it open and send some pics if it is truly dead:p

Have you unplugged the PSU for a few minutes and then tried again?

Some PSU's have a "soft fuse" that need to reset.

WOW - thanks for the quick response fellas.

The power supply I blew today was Enermax and I don't think it's still under warranty.

I only tried it moments after blowing it - I never thought about a "soft" fuse that resets itself automatically but I'll give it a try tomorrow morning.
