View Full Version : Strider 1500w - safe to use PP04 on different rails for same gpu

I've just bought a silverstone PP04 short cable adaptor kit to make things neater. Silverstone says it works on the strider series so hoping it works on the 1500w. It comes supplied with 4 pci-e cables. Each one only has a 6+2pin connector not la 6 and a 6+2pin as on the long modular connectors which come with the PSU. So to power a GTX480, I would need to use 2 of these PP04 pci-e cables and hence 2 of the 12v rail connectors on the psu (as opposed to just 1 rail if I was using the pci-e cable that came standard). So is it safe to spread the load for a single GPU across 2 rails. I would obviously be doing the same for the 2nd gpu if going sli, so effectively spreading the load across 4 rails for 2 gpu's.

Also, I was looking at the NZXT individually prepbraided pci-e cables too. The NZXT 8pin cable is in fact just a 6pin male extension to 6+2pin female convertor. I was hoping it was a 6+2pin male to 6+2pin female. So I was wondering if it safe to plug the 6pin male end of this NZXT cable into the 6pin female end of the PSU's 6+2pin cable and just ignore the +2 part and hope it all comes out ok on the other 6+2pin end which plugs into the gpu. So 6+2pin psu cable ---> 6pin NZXT extension ---> converted to 6+2pin NZXT plugged into gpu.

Thanks

A quote from OW's review of the 1500W Strider:
And with a 25A limit on each rail, it is very unlikely you'll run into the overcurrent protection, even with the most powerful cards now on the market. And if you do, with four 12V rails dedicated to only PCI-E connectors, you can always start combining, as this unit draws its 12V water from one big pool.
There's only one 12V source so there will be no issue with using connectors from multiple rails for one GPU.

As for the second question, I'd say most people here agree that the two extra grounds on the 8-pin connector doesn't add much current capacity and that a 6-pin -> 8-pin adapter shouldn't be an issue.

As far as I know and have read, the two extra grounds on an 8-pin PCIe connector are merely there to make the card happy. Officially one of these grounds at least should be a 12V sense wire, but PSU manufacturers haven't implemented this (yet).
