View Full Version : SeaSonic quirk

This has been bugging me for a while. I like SeaSonic; they make good PSUs. Their new stuff is really impressive, the M12D platform, the X-series, the new S12II Bronze units... But something has stuck out at me: why doesn't SeaSonic make anything over 850W?

Seriously, I've never seen or heard of any SeaSonic power supply rated at over 850W. I'm sure they could do it; any company that could turn out a gem like the X750 should be able to turn out a decent 1kW unit. But I haven't seen or heard anything like that.

So why is SeaSonic limiting themselves like this?

Maybe they like making money. The market for 1kw PS's is insignificant compared to their under 500w units when you figure in all the units they OEM. The only real reason for selling big honking PSs is to make a name for the company; Sea Sonic already has that.

Cool, I can't wait to see more X-series PSUs appear. I still think it's the coolest (and emptiest) SMPS design to come along since SMPSs were invented :)

560 watt would be great to see. @ $170, the 650watt is just more than most people are willing to spend, even with great efficiency.

If they can get down to the $110-120 price point with the lower wattage, I think they could sell a boat load.

Competition if finally looking to pick up in the Gold rated PSU market. :D

If they had an X450, I'd be all over that.

Yes, but they will raise the price on the Fanless units and sell to ultra quite market, hence the price reductions will stop at the 560 model.

I know the component, labor costs, and transportation costs are largely fixed. (there is really very little difference in cost of production for a 450 watt as compared to a 650 watt)

The linear price increases with wattage is mostly a marketing convenience.

However, since 90% of single GPU systems are well under 500 watts, it would be great to see a mass market(in my opinion something closer to $100 than to $150) gold rated PSU.

I'll grab a couple of the X400 fanless if they're released.

Price isn't really an issue. Lack of Noise + High Efficiency are top priorities for me.

I know a 400W psu with Gold rating isn't going to save me a lot compared to a Bronze one but it's the 'feel good factor' at work here ... and I'm willing to pay for it :p

that will be interesting to have a fanless 400! But will the temperature be high if without a fan?

Not with a PSU that efficient, probably. Very little heat generated.

FSP already has something like this, however. Their Zen series. How good are those again? I'm at least moderately skeptical of most FSP units, they rarely compare well against other brands.

I'm using a couple of the FSP Zen 400 and they're excellent. Zero noise and produced very little heat :

If Seasonic has the X400 fanless with 80Plus Gold then of course it's even better (theoretically at least).

The New X Series broadens the original X series lineup [...] and upgraded DC-DC circuit design.
I have a feeling that newest Corsair AX750/850 are based on those new X series.

If the X1200 is as good as the X-650 and X-750 ones then it will dominate in the heavy watts category (along with a normal price of course)

I dunno, the Corsair AX1200 is looking pretty good. But we need to see how it performs on 120VAC at 50C on Jeremy or Gabe's equipment.

Seasonic has an X-Series 1200w unit coming out (or atleast showed off) that is what he is referencing.

I'm not so sure. Corsair's X series are notable for having all the main 12V loads coming straight off the PSU motherboard, and having a daughterboard with the DC-DC converters for the lower voltages that supplies a second row of modular connectors.

The only 12V on the second row is for the Molex and SATA connectors.

The 24-pin main connector is split into two pieces, one on the first row (+12V, +5BSB, PWRGOOD, power on, -12V, grounds), and one on the second (3.3V, 5V, grounds).

The AX1200 pictures don't follow this pattern; they seem to run extremely heavy wires to a modular board, but that board has all of the connectors.

Not that Seasonic couldn't change their minds, but it doesn't look like an X series to me.

I think you're miss understanding. He's (atleast the way I read it) is not talking about the Corsair unit at all, and was just saying that he hopes the X-1200 from SS lives up to the performance laid out by the X-650 & X-750

Since there are already AX1200 and SG1200(errr.. HCP1200, whatever) out there I don't think anyone can dominate this category.
