View Full Version : What is the best modular PSU?
I'd love to see a single rail modular psu, but as of yet I haven’t seen any.
What I want is an active PFC psu, 600+ watts and for it to be modular. What are the best power supplies that fit those criteria?
Thanks

Seasonic M12, Corsair HX620W, Enermax Liberty 620W. Some of the best. What system are you looking to power?

Technically, the Corsair and Seasonic M12 are one 12V rail.
Another single 12V rail PSU that's modular is the Ultra XVS 700W. Which, unlike other XVS units, I don't mind recommending for high end rigs because it's based on the same platform as the X-Finity 600W. Unfortunately, it's not APFC. In the US, that doesn't mean squat. But if you're in Europe, it's a no go. ;)

the 450w OCZ modstream has a single 12v rail and Euro versions have active PFC, but that's not what you're looking for.

We might disagree a little about the rails
Not sure I see what's to disagree with - it has been proven beyond any doubt to me the Corsairs and Antec Trios are single 12v.

I think you mean the Corsairs and and Seasonic M12s :)

Nope, I meant the Corsairs and Trios - will have to re-read the M12 review again, but they looked to be dual 12v.

All three, Antec Trio, Corsair & M-12, all have no "per rail" over current protection,
but does that truly make them single rail?

All three sets of wires are physically jumpered to one 12v source - that makes them single 12v ;)

All three sets of wires are physically jumpered to one 12v source - that makes them single 12v ;)Of course, but if each "leg" (rail) has seperate caps or filters or whatever, then it would be "rails".
I wish I had it in my hands right now, then I could show you, however, soon, soon.
I know I'm being criptic, but will see there is a reason.

Correct. Like the 750W Seventeam Matt reviewed a while back (marketed as an XG 900W.) It had four rails, and they did merge into one, but there was a choke coil in between the rails that acted as sort of a filter. So there is an actual "noise separation" between the rails. But since they're all on the same circuit with no OCP, you could load any of the rails up any way to Sunday.
The Corsair, Seasonic, Antec, etc. have no such circuitry. You can follow the traces to the same point with no components in between.
This is what I'm looking at powering...
ASUS P5B Deluxe/WiFi-AP
E6600
G.SKILL 2GB F2-6400PHU2-2GBHZ
SB LIVE AUDIGY 2
Lite-On SHM-165P6S
Western Digital Raptor WD1500ADFD
Evga 7900GS 256MB
(USB POWERED: multi card reader, mouse, keyboard, mic, two printers)
Keep in mind that I will jump on the G80 once the prices come down and they have proven themselves. Also, imagine that I have 5 sata hard drives in this config. The one raptor is just for now to get the system running. Then imagine that I have a second dvd/rw drives.
I plan on getting all of these upgrades within the life of this build. I would like a PSU that would be able to accommodate that.

Any kind of SLi/Crossfire DX10 OP? High or low end?

With your 7900 you could get by with a 400W. Even if you go with a single G80 card, you only need 500W. SLI is a whole 'nother story.
FWIW: I've been told that G80 is only 100W per card. Less than a 7950.
That's why I'm not buying this whole "800W" news.

I thought that it was confirmed that these cards were supposed to take 300W a piece?

I thought the same. Especially since prior to that news everyone was talking about how the G80 was going to require an external PSU.
BTW for my system I plan on a mid to high end G80 card. But not in SLI.
With that, what power supply do you recomend? I'm sort of leaning towards the Corsair HX 620W right now. It's not perfect, but its pretty dam close IMO.

I think the HX520W version is perfect for you.

That was never "confirmed" to my knowledge. Find a link. Dailytech just states that they talked to an Nvidia tech in Taiwan. I talked to someone here in the US.
If you think about it, it doesn't makes sense. How can a second video card DOUBLE your PSU requirements when a single video card may be only (ha) 50% of your total power consumption. The math isn't right.

PC P&C's new 1KW seem to confirm the worst, at least for the first "next gens". :(
I just ordered the 620watt Corsair PSU!
Overkill... little, pwnij... Oh yeah!
