View Full Version : 8800GTS: The next Dustbuster?

I stopped by a friend's house to shoot the shit, who recently SLI'ed some
eVGA 8800GTS's.
I arrived and knocked on the door, his wife let me in.
I went to his den where the PC was, and the first thing I noticed, was the
infamous sound of a Dustbuster{5800U}!
He was playing F.E.A.R :E.P and in the middle of a firefight.
The setup is in a old CM Wavemaster and chocked full of fans and drives.
I shoulden't be able to hear the hsf on the 8800GTS's over the game and the
other hardware:eek:
I had him mute the game so I could here them{8800GTS's} ramp up and down. Just horrible whoosing sound on anything except 2D, where their quiet
What worries me, their not OC:eek:
So you know what's going to happen when they are;)
I might hold off on one of the 8800GTS's for now untill I can find a nice hsf
for it;)
Of course these are eVGA brand, I wonder if other brands are as Dustbuster likeable:confused:
Anybody else with experience on the said card, comments welcome:)

i dunno, it doesnt seem loud to me. I got other fans in the case I can hear besides the GTS. But then again I'm not much of silent freak so it could be loud to others.

Its the first I have read where the GTS or GTX is as loud as you claim. Solo or in SLI form. If it was truly as loud as the infamous 5800U I think we'd have heard of it long before now. Sound is subjective though. Some people have a different threshold for it than others.

Could it be he had the reg hack for overclocking his 8800GTS and had the "run fans at full RPM" box checked?

If you mean the fan daemon is 100% in all modes, no , it's Nvidia ref.
They are silent in everything but 3D:) not OC., no coolbits as yet.

"Coolbits." Yeah... that's what I was trying to think of.
Well... I should be benchmarking this dual 8800GTX build tomorrow. I'll tell you if it's loud. :D

I can't wait to plug it into the Weibo and see what it pulls from the wall.
I'd love to think this Ultra 1kW is overkill. :D

overkill for sure lol..my powermeter shows about 470W peak with gpu @ 690 and cpu @3.9 :)

No.. The 8800GTX SLI build I've got up on the bench right now is a QX6700. Not the Quad Father. I've got to get CPU coolers for the Quad Father still.

Ok...
Interesting build.
First, the X-ro PSU had a broken 135MM fan. It was quiet when idle, but under load the fan hit the fan grill and made an annoying ding ding ding sound.
Fortuately, I received an X3 1kW PSU from Ultra today. Now that's in the build.
The second of the two 8800GTX cards had it's fan spinning full RPM until I installed the drivers. I'm surprised Vista didn't know what a GeForce card was. Didn't expect it to know "8800GTX", but it was calling both cards "Standard VGA."
Haven't done much with the PC but play "ink ball." Tomorrow I'll get online w/ it and install 3DMark.

Most Nvidia cards{newer GPU's, 7 series &up} tend to run balls to the wall
untill you install drivers, hence the drivers contain the fan daemon ;)
The {any} OS drivers don't and won't support the daemon, unless you run
somthing like RivaTuner along side of the OS drivers and customize your own daemon startup profile. But who in their right state of mind would even consider running a "Default display adapter" on a "Plug and Play Monitor"
As for your mishap with the dink, dink, dink fan, I have nothing to say.
Because I know I would be rather frakking frelled off:mad:

Well... I'll just have to swap the fan out. It looks like there's just excessive play in it, so when it spins full RPM, the fan pushes away from the hub and hits the grill. It doesn't do this when it lys flat on the bench, so maybe I can put it in an upside-down case. :D
As for my observation of the fans: I know the fan speed is controlled by the driver, but ONLY the second of the two cards had its fan spinning balls out. The card is slot 1 was perfectly quiet.
Another thing that's weird about this nVidia 680i board is the SmartFan. The case fanshave et to spin. You can set the fans to "manual" in the BIOS, but then they spin full RPM even when I set them to "50%." That can't be right. :(
jonnyGURU
12-19-2006, 08:17 PM
Well... now I'm pissed.
Everything was running great.
Newest BIOS on the board, Vista is installed, no drivers for G80 in Vista, but I managed to "search for new drivers" to get the XP drivers installed.
Installed 3DMark'06. Confirmed it is Vista compatible.
When I run 3DMark'06, I get a blank screen for 15 seconds, then a "beep" like the board is rebooting and then nothing.
Replaced PSU. Same thing.
Tried each 8800GTX by itself. Same thing.
Swapped out RAM. Same thing.
Nothing's overclocked, over volted, etc. Smartfan is disabled and the fans are spinning full RPM.
Temps are all very good (only 31C on the CPU.)
So.. the problem is:
1. Vista.
2. Bad motherboard.
3. Bad CPU?
I've got another CPU to try. I'll do that tomorrow as right now I'm not in the mood to pull the board. If that doesn't work, I'm putting XP on it.
If that doesn't work, it's got to be the board. :(

You might have to hold off on Vista untill Jan. when the drivers are released:o
I would go ahead and dual boot XP with Vista, but your going to have to wipe Vista and put XP on first;)

Doesnt matter wether I have been in the presence of a G80or not. If it were as loud as the 5800U it would be all over the Net. People would be screaming bloody murder most likely. :D

I didn't think so;)
I for one "have" been in the presence of a few GTX's and GTS's, and I can tell you that every one of them was louder then what they replaced. They may not "all' sound like Dustbusters, but I was looking for "experienced" users with the said card, who might
have somthing "useful" to point out. NOT what everybody on the net. thinks.
If I wanted to know that, I would just go to the Egg and read the "excellent" reviews on it;)

Well... so far I can say that the 8800GTX is quieter than my 7800GTX while idle (just running normal Windows apps.)
Hopefully I'll get to find out today what they sound like under load.

The 8800 GTX's fan doesn't kick into full speed even while gaming. You can force it to 100% in ntune but even then it still isn't loud or close to loud imo. Its quiet enough for me to leave it at full rpm 24/7.

I have a GTX from BFG and a GTS from eVGA in my house in two different comps,GTX replaced a X1800XT,GTS replaced a Asus EN7800GT,both were much less noisy then the cards they replaced.'Dustbuster' I think not...

then the 7900 series, and as for your X1800XT, that goes without saying:p

And the GPU fans aren't NEARLY as loud as my two 7800GTX's. Not even close.
EDIT: Funny... Installed latest drivers and Coolbits, set overclock and ran 3DMark'06 again and I actually scored lower. DOH!

Glad to hear they're quiet boards. I just removed my 7800gtx from my water loop http://img133.imageshack.us/img133/6184/17july06002sq8.th.jpg (http://img133.imageshack.us/my.php?image=17july06002sq8.jpg) in anticipation of an upgrade to an 8800 or r600.

Yeah.. I know what you mean.
I did have water cooling my 7800 cards, but put the stock cooling back on the so I could get some benchmarks for an upcoming water cooling kit review and I thought the same thing, "Geez... were these things this loud?" Fortunately, I'm getting used to it again. :D

FYI: I only measured 455.9W coming from the wall running 3DMark2006.
Assuming the Ultra 1kW PSU I'm using is only 80% efficient at this load, that would mean my DC output is only 364.72W. ;)
Running the "CPU tests" (where I'd only get about 2fps) I was only pulling 300W from the wall. The test that used the most power was the airship and dragon scene.
Naturally, I expect there to be a 3DMark2007 w/ DX10 support that will push the cards harder. I will do it again at that time.

Oh.. I had this bottle of wine the other day. What's this mean? Wine that pays to OC (Over Clock?) That sounds appropriate.

No. I got the new "Coolbit" (forget what they changed the name too) when I got the 97.44 drivers. The old Coolbits didn't even allow the new driver to show the overclock option in the control panel. ;)
