I am looking for an inexpensive basic power supply for a gaming system.
I would be using a ATI x1950 pro, 2 gigs of ddr2 800, 1 7200rpm IDE drive, one dvd drive, a soundblaster audigy, a netgear nic, 5 case fans on a intel core 2 duo mobo, with a core 2 duo proc.

Someone meantioned a mercury ams. Not sure how good that is, but it is also only $50 bucks at newegg. What else should I be looking at?

AMS Mercury is decent. For lower cost units, my own favorites are the Enhance 80+ units over at Ewiz, like this one:

Do you think I could get away with powering that system with my antec truepower 430? It is the original one.. about 3 years old.

That one

Nope - too much 12v demand on an old CWT based PSU that is likely to have some well cooked capacitors already. It may work if the PSU is in perfect condition, but that's unlikely for a 3 year old CWT.

Okay.. so would the mercury be enough for me then? or is it a pretty low quality ps?

It's a GOOD quality PSU. It just lacks bling, puts out adequate power and doesn't cost a lot.

THANKS Jonny. I definetly don't need bling ... I mean.. its a psu.
