I have the opportunity to purchase the PSU below for less than $50usd:
http://80plus.org/manu/psu/psu_reports/SP690_CWT_PUK500V-G_ATX12V_500W_Report.pdf
So obviously, it's quite efficient, but I am unsure of the overall quality of the PSU. Any ideas? What branded PSUs use the guts from this thing?
Thanks in advance,
:)

PUK platform? It's fine, but I guess no brand is using this platform.

I am working on getting pics from the seller. All I know at this moment is that is was a demo unit and fully functional, so it is very slightly used.
So should i jump on this? What do you guys think? I need a new ~500W PSU and the more I look at prices on newegg, the more attractive this CWT is...

Just FYI: It's not really 80 Plus Gold. At least not the unit you'll get. Only the unit submitted to 80 Plus was Gold. ;)

WOW! A reply from the man himself!
hmm, ok, well I assume the unit will at least be close to 80plus gold. Right? Or are you referring to a "bait and switch" where the unit I get will be made of different components?

It'll be very close. Hardly worth mentioning if it weren't for the moral dilemna involved. ;)

Unfortunately no pics from the seller. He did tell me some information that was worrying to me. I asked if the unit had 40A on the +12V line just like this unit:
http://www.cwt.com.tw/english/2_product/1_detail.php?ID=930
He responded by saying it had +12V1 = 30A, and +12V2 = 30A. Simply math says that's impossible for a 500 watt unit. I am waiting a reply to make sure he simply didn't give me the specs off another more powerful unit he is selling.

Presumably those are just the individual OCP limits for the rails. The combined maximum rating is surely lower.

Right. You NEVER take +12V1, +12V2, etc. and add them together.

Yeah, I've seen 500W with four 20A +12V rails... But it was a cheap-o and I'd be surprised if it could do 35A total.

Not a good photographer, sorry
This is a PUK600V ( easy enough to see in the pic )
Silver rated according to http://www.80plus.org/manu/psu/psu_reports/SP644_CWT_PUK600V_ATX12V_600W_Report.pdf

So the internal layout and components are tweaked from the original DSG design...
Did I see a relay on the AC input?

Yeah. Funny there's a CWT label on the outside and a Thermaltake branded fan on the inside. ;)

A relay is an electrically operated switch.

I have a CWT-branded PSU as well, bought it from jonny. has an integrated TEC. Louder than a turbo cool.

What brand are the caps in that puk600?
There's a guy selling the 500's on ebay also.

I was temped to buy one from that guy too. I bought his solytech sl-9600eps for curiosity and efficiency reasons. Good psu I would have to say.
Anyway, that looks like it has all UCC caps in it.

any idea what that primary cap is? I havent been able to identify it.
for $30 it sounds like a good option for my nas box that runs 24x7

You're welcome
I've had it for about 8 weeks and ran for only 1 to see if it would survive, it's waiting for a system to go into.
Connectors are minmal;
1 SATA
2 Molex ( one on each of 2 lines )
8 pin EPS with 4 pin tail ( I modded it to 4+4 )
2x 8 pin PCIE with 6 pin tails
About a month before buying it I got a TPN550 from the same guy, that's humming along in my son's box.

Been using the PUK500V-G for about 2 days 24x7 and I am pretty pleased..
Running an Intel Xeon e3110 and a srcsas18e HW Raid card, and 4 (soon to be 5) WD 1TB Green drives, and 1 seagate 250GB boot drive. My kill-a-watt shows 88w on the AC side.
And right now its in rebuild after adding the 4th drive to the array. I haven't done any math, but that has to have the efficiency in the high 80's.
