I've searched at length for the last several days for information on the HEC Zephyr 1000CW 1000w PSU, but have not turned a darned thing up.

http://hecgroupusa.com/modules/Cataloger/Cataloger.Image.php?i=zephyr1000cm-2_f_3_300_0.jpg&ac=65182

Here is the power supply in question at NewEgg:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817339030&cm_re=hec_zephyr-_-17-339-030-_-Product

The ratings are awesome (#2 best rated in "1000w or over" category after PCP&C) on NewEgg, but I'm beginning to wonder about the quality of these units.

Are these the same as the re-badged Cougar units seen in this thread:

http://www.jonnyguru.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6210

...or are these something else entirely? For $139.99, it's appealing. However, the 950W Corsair is only about $20 more, and we all know that's quality.

Anyone have any info on this HEC 1000w supply?

why not get the tx950? its alot better than the hx1000 :)

the positive ratings in newegg aren't that helpful........

the negative ones are more helpful in my opinion

but really ratings in newegg don't mean much....

Well from the past we have seen that HEC's new offerings can be damn efficient, but while delivering out of spec voltages and ripple.

-waits for Stephan Payne to chime in-

If you want a cheap 1kW PSU, get this: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5557175&CatId=106

Otherwise, go for something like the TX950. Forget the HEC, since it's most likely one of their crappier models that they seem to like selling in North America (unlike Stefan's beloved "real" Cougars that are apparently only available in a few places in Europe).

I'd go for an Enhance built unit like the the one from Zalman or a Silverstone like the Plus ST1000-P.

And I won't bother with the old bulky CWT PUC Design like the HX1000 or Ikonik.

Oh, and the Coolermaster Silent Pro should be fine and a real good unit, that one I'd like co recomm.

The Silent Pro is a group-regulated 1kW PSU. It may not be as bad as the old Epsilons, but it's not a "real good" unit; at best it's just a pretty decent one. And a PUC would certainly be better.

I had my hands on a real Cougar (Cougar CM 1000W) and it's a cripple... My best suggestion is stay away from it.

Wich one??

The ones with only Teapo electrolytes in it or the one with Nippon Chemicon electrolytes and Capxon polymers?

Just FYI - I received my order of this PSU today.

Teapo cap / 85 deg C - same crappy design as the one OC3D reviewed.

It's on sale for $109.99 today @ NewEgg, still not worth it.

Thanks for the comments, all.

Ikonik does not have a PUC model....

The latter. One pi filter including one polymer for each 12V rail (leads were left too long IMO) but the ripple was still pretty high. Minor rails weren't clean either. Regulation on minor rails were only mediocre.

The grounding screw on the solder side was ugly by the way.

Which is the real cougar?

Which is the real cougar?
It's a trick question; the answer is neither one :p.
