Not too long ago, I took my very first look at the Thermaltake Toughpower XT 850W unit and found it wanting. Thermaltake was anxious to improve on things, and so they did; as I found in my last review when I saw what the new and improved 750W Toughpower XT could do.
Today, I'm looking at the 850W model once more. Has this one also been improved enough to bring home a recommendation? Come on in and see.

For the record, I haven't seen Bugula since the load testing. She wouldn't leave the photography table when I wanted to take my pictures, so I thought I'd use her to have y'all questioning my sanity again. Enjoy :D

Once again Thermaltake's idea that their name demands a price premium kills a perfectly serviceable unit.
Not to mention their insistence on riding an out of date platform for all it is worth

I was impressed that they had breathed some life into the aging 750W PSH, making what it always should have been. But with no attempt to give the refreshed 850W a reasonable 12V capacity they are just wasting their time. There is no reason to even have an 850W model if you are only going to add 2A compared to the 750W, well apart from the fact that they can charge more for it.

And he wasn't about to fight that big metal sticker again this time out ;)

Is the label like that aluminum air-duct tape?

He'll have to damage the aluminum sticker to dissect the unit. Believe me it's like PIA.

Nope, it's a thick aluminum slab that bends all to heck when you try and get at the cover screws.

More expensive than the 850W Signature. What a joke. I was impressed by the 750W model, but this is just pointless.

Price ruined it all.

Nice review, OW. Too bad about the ps and its results, though. C'est la vie.
BTW.....how's that 5th Ave. that followed you home doing you got for your mom? Great looking car and nice color combo.
Wish I could get one to find me and follow me home that looked as good as that one.....or an Imperial (I wish!)

It blew out the load leveling suspension last week and I spent all day Friday swapping out the air shocks and springs for Dynasty parts. In 90kph winds. You know it's windy when dealing with the dead leaves in the face is worse than the twisted ankle you got or the suspension job itself. Got another big job coming up on Dad's 2002 Caravan swapping out the rear hub assemblies. This van has 320k kms on it and the old ones are no doubt rusted right to the axle. Yay.
Keep looking, they're out there. Nice and cheap right now, even the Imperials.

At least this TT isn't going to eat your GPU as a final gesture!
I was pleasantly impressed by the 750W, if only TT could produce an entire line of "JonnyGURU Recommended!" PSU's!

1) You have a roach infestation
2) How do you differentiate between the older versiona nd this newer version?
Thanks

That's not a roach :p
You should have been around here before we sealed up the walls outside. There used to be box elder bugs everywhere in the house. These days, it's just one or two whenever it's warm enough to come out.
As bugs go, I've always liked these little critters. They don't bite, don't mind being around people, and in general don't make too much a nuisance of themselves.
BTW - we have a rule against hotlinking images.

Wish they were cheap....not around here, at leastm when a '91 Imperial with over 120K miles is listed at $4K. C'est la vie....guess I'll keep looking and looking.
And as for the wind and such, I understand all too well.
Still, you've gotten her a gorgeous vehicle and I'm jealous! ;)
