Hi all,
I've been researching this issue, but would like everyone's thoughts on what would make a good aftermarket HSF for my system:
Antec Signature SG-850 PSU (1 80mm fan)
Antec 1200 Case (6 fans) (side panel currently off of system)
Gigabyte GA-MA790FX-UDP5 Mobo
AMD Phenom II X955 BE @ 3.2ghz (stock HSF, no OC)
Patriot Memory 4 x 2gb @ 1600mhz
ATI HD4890 x 2 @ OC to 940/1140mhz (stock cooling)
Seagate 1TB 7200.12
APC Backup-UPS XS1500
LG DVD/CD RW
Currently my CPU runs around 40-42 @ idle and up to 55 @ load.
My GPU's run around 61-65 @ idle and up to almost 90 @ load.
- What HSF do you use
- What kind of temp improvements did you see
- Where did you buy your HSF
- I've heard that perfect flatness ot the HSF base is preferred. Thoughts
I really appreciate everyone thoughts and time. Thank you!
John

Thanks,
JohnI try.
I usually try to get people to look-up the information if it is simple like this, forever the teacher as well as the student.
But to answer your question.
The Prolimatech Megahalems is universally considered the best air-cooler, if it will fit in your case.
The eternal Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme will always be near the top, depending upon the fan(s) chosen.
The new Xigmatek Thor's Hammer S126384 & their other direct contact heat-pipe coolers do a pretty good job & the original Rifle 1283 can be had for under $30.
Before you decide read this, I am going to try one on my next personal build.
CORSAIR CWCH50 Water Cooler: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835181009&Tpk=Corsair%20H50
Now some will say, that with only one 120mm radiator it can't handle high OC'es, but read this & see the truth for yourself.

iT IS THE FAN, IT IS ALWAYS IN THE FANS!

Hey John, greetings from here in Homer Georgia so I'm not too far from you. I'm running a AMD Phenom II X2 550 Black Edition over clocked to 3.7 and unlocked all 4 cores. I'm using a OEM hsf from a AMD PHENOM II X4 that I got for 15 dollars and my temps are at idle around 39 and under full load when I was stress testing it it got believe it to be almost 52 degrees and this is in a aerocool m40 case. I did not check temp on the gpu on my GIGABYTE GA-MA785GM-US2H.
