Hey, can anyone explain the difference between the TX and HX series. I'm about to buy a new psu and looking at the 850w of these two. Which one should I be considering? Does the HX series worth the price difference? Finally if I should be considering the 850hx, would going for the 1000hx be a better option in the long run?

my build is: gigabyte x48-ds5, q9450, evga gtx285, g. skill 2x2gb ddr2 1066, 200gb seagate, sb audigy 2.
current psu is a thermaltake silent purepower 680w (5 year old :P). the video card and the ram are the new components that I haven't installed yet, so I'm basically assuming this psu won't be enough for the final build.

thanks in advance.

HX is modular (And more efficient, for the 750W and 850W)

HX is the only way :)

HX850 is a new platform from CWT, called DSG. Uses DC-DC conversion to produce 3.3V and 5V from 12V...this helps improve efficiency.

Voltage regulation, Ripple suppression and Efficiency are all excellent on the HX850, it is also modular and carries a 7 year warranty.

TX850 is a slightly modified PSH850. It has beefed up the secondary filtering to improve ripple suppression over other PSH850 units, yet it still has much higher ripple at higher loads than the HX850.

It is non-modular and has a 5 year warranty.

For your build even the HX750 is more than enough, even if you get a second GTX 285. The HX850 is actually a better PSU than the HX1000 in the 850W operating range IMO.

I would argue that that is more of a fact than an opinion. Better ripple suppression, voltage regulation, and equal or better efficiency. The only really comparable PSUs are the Signature 850W, M12D 850W, and Silencer 910W.

The HX850 is really a better choice than the HX1000 for most systems.

I believe the HX 750/850, Silencer 910, and Signature 650/850 are all better than any 1000W power supply - though the best 1000W supplies come close...

As others have stated, the HX850 provides cleaner power, has modular connectors, while the TX850 costs less. For me the price difference is insignificant (last time I looked: about $20 on an approximately $200 price), so I'd buy the HX. For your system the HX750 (or an Antec Signature 650W, or an Antec True Power New 750W) would: provide sufficient power, provide cleaner power than the TX850, and should cost about the same as the TX850.

That was basically my point. The best ~1000W PSU is the Revolution85+ 1050W, and even that doesn't perform at the same level as the PSUs I mentioned above. The only reason I would recommend one is if it's really necessary, but for most systems, one of the better ~850W PSUs would be a better choice.

the HX 750 does carry the same technology though?.. just ovbiously less amps on the rail? am i right or wrong?

Hardware secrets is the only site I know which has disassembled both and compared them:

http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/775
http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/741

They use obviously use the same platform (CWT DSG), which for now seems to be exclusive to the Corsair HX 750/850. Most components appear to be identical, though the 750 has some down sized components (primary capacitors, PFC and 12V transistors, and maybe a few others).

They are both equally good. Which one you should get depends on your power requirements.
