View Full Version : Quick question about a new HX850 Corsair PSU, and loose soldering "bits".

I've received a new HX850 Corsair PSU yesterday (box in perfect condition), and when I opened it, something was rattling inside it, like a loose screw.

Shaking it delicately, a small piece (lets say 2mm) of solder came out. Before plunging it my computer, it did the paper clip trick to see if it was going to burst in flames but nothing happened.

It's powering my computer right now and it's working perfectly.

Should I be concerned and return the unit?

I've returned the unit immediatly and not even tried to plug it in.

So, yes, you should return it.

That's what I thought. Someone told me it could simply be a small part of excess solder that came loose, which could be a non issue, but that it would probably be safer not to take the chance.

Same thing happened to you? Was it with the same Corsair unit?

No such things never happend to me.

The problem is, you can't know for sure where the solder came from and you can't open the PSU to look for it so you have to return it...

It could be a minor problem but it could be something serious, you'll never know...

I've already placed an order for a new unit (same one), and requested an RMA for the functional yet potentially defective unit, just to be safe. Thanks for your help!

Thanks for posting this thread - I'll go check a few boxes in the back and mention it to engineering so they can add this to the QC screen.

The place where I'm returning it is usually really good with RMAs, and does not charge restocking fees if the product is really deemed defective.

The fact that it still "works" will hopefully not be an issue. I've also explained the situation to them, hoping that they do not resell the unit as an "open box".

Quick update: I've received my new unit and no strange rattle or loose bits of soldering, but the 24-pin connector is broken and cannot be connected to the motherboard. I guess this happened at the factory during testing.

I'll probably swap the connector from the unit I'm returning, since I do not plan to be out of a PSU for another week.

I'll PM you with the details. It's not a big deal, especially since the second unit is working perfectly. I'm really happy with my purchase! :D
